A new full distance race ‘Expedition Man’ in northern Nevada is due to be held on August 25th, 2012.
I wondered if anyone new more about this race or who the race director is? Anyone from the area around Carson City / Reno, NV have any thoughts on the course please, and maybe likely weather in late August?
Many thanks
Expedition Man would like to introduce the inaugural Endurance Festival featuring Northern Nevada’s 1st Ultra Distance Triathlon. A unique course that starts swimmers at Zephyr Cove in the beautiful southern part of Lake Tahoe, Ca. The 112 mile bike ride will utilizes a variety of Northern Nevada’s scenery including a 1,400 ft elevation drop into Carson City. Three fast out-and-back’s around the Sparks Marina will cap off this extraordinary race.
Well, maybe I should hold my tongue, as there’s a good chance that I know the race organization in some way, shape, or form…
Kinda surprised that I hadn’t heard anything about this; Reno’s a small town that way!
Swim will be awesome.
Bike course has huge potential, but it’s clear that they needed to get both distances into Sparks. Let’s just say that if i were heading out on a 112-mile ride from Tahoe, it wouldn’t be that one. Getting back to where it ends, though…
6 identical legs at the Sparks Marina??? Oh. Lord. It’s a concrete surface, it’ll be blistering hot, and there’s no shade. Of all the places to end the race…
Not to wax poetic, but this is SUCH a beautiful area. The course as it’s published now really does a disservice to what it could be. Let’s say that the swim and the first half of the bike will leave the racers wondering what the hell happened later in the day.
Some of us old guys will know that this is not the first ultradistance triathlon in N Nevada … the original classic was the “Worlds Toughest” at S Lake Tahoe back in the 80’s.
Too bad the original course for that can’t come back … the bike course was essentially the so called death ride as it exists now with some mileage added. It was beautiful scenery with some huge climbs. My recollection was that Lake Tahoe water was in the low 50’s for the swim then …suspect is still pretty chilly.
Sounds like good potential with a few tweaks - such as a nicer run i.e. not on concrete.
If you find out anymore in the near future would love to hear.
I came across this race as I will be in the US in August and looking for something non WTC and similar to Silverman which I raced in 08. Maybe there are other 1/2 or full distance races in late August I haven’t found yet? I’ll be based in CO and would love to do a short trip to Lake Tahoe, Mammoth, and get a race in at the same time.
No worries. I’ll poke around a bit and post back here with anything I find out about Expedition Man. There’s not a whole lot long-course wise in these parts during that time of year. There’s a 50k at Burning Man! If you head this way you could put together one hell of a training camp in gorgeous country instead of basing your trip around a race.
The race would be an extra. Returning to CO for about a month of training, catching up with friends, and eating Chipotle Hence looking around for possible events in late August with a bit of sightseeing - haven’t been to northern NV before so when I came across the race it seemed to tick the boxes.
Bump for any info on this race and/or if anyone knows about the promoter.
Entry fee is only $275 until the end of the year, and this works great in my schedule - end of August. Swimming in Lake Tahoe is a huge plus, although the weather can be really hot in Reno that time of year 100+
Its the first time for this race, is it the first race for the RD?

Don’t know much about the RD but I spoke with him on the phone and he seems to know what he is doing. The course looks like a lot of fun and I love a good summer road trip. I am going to give the 1/2 a shot. At only $100 (early fee) it’s cheaper than some sprints in SoCal.

I am probably going to sign up for either the half or the full, haven’t decided yet… This race certainly has a lot of positives - cheap registration, driving distance from So Cal, and Lake Tahoe-ish location.
Also, would like to see an elevation profile of the bike, currently there’s just a general map on the the website.

I was checking the route on mapmyride and it looks like it’s going to be a lot more down than up. I came out with about 2000’ of drop for the half. Really just one significant climb in the first 10 miles and then it’s mostly down or flat into Sparks. With a flat run it could be a very fast course.
I signed up for the half already to take advantage of the early fee.

Average highs for Sparks in late August is 88 degrees, it could be a lot hotter too. Looks like a fun day, might have to consider it… My wife is looking for another full race for next year. I could easily get in some trail running and some gambling while she rides!

I did the 1993 version of Charlie Lincoln’s World’s Toughest Tri. We swam in Lake Tahoe, and headed out of Tahoe via Luther, summitted Monitor and then turned around at the 50 mile mark and retraced our path…I nearly died coming back into Tahoe up Luther…I remember speedometer showing 7 kph (4 mph or so…)…never thought I could ride that slow. Run was 20 miles around Fallen Leaf Trail. That race was the best race I’ve ever done…and yes, water was in the 50’s swimming in Lake Tahoe…thought I was going to die between the cold water and the 6400 ft altitude!
Just looked at the course maps and profile…too bad this is net downhill. If that is the case, I’m not entirely interested in doing it in the future. I might be convinced yet, but regardless for this year, even if I am in condition to race, I’d be doing IM Mont Tremblant the weekend before it. A race out of South Tahoe has a ton of potential.
Renorider, what you should do is get a crew of dudes out and do the old WTT course as a training day for Embrunman (I assume you live in Reno and it would not be crazy to get to South Tahoe)…swim in Tahoe-bike Luther-Monitor-Luther and then perhaps tack on a 10k run and do part of the fallen leaf trail route (it had 2000 ft of climbing the year I did it). Make sure you take a lot of pictures and post a training report. FYI, the old WTT was in the 3rd week of Aug, so around the same time of year. Race morning we scraped frost off the windshields of our rental car, but into the bike and run the temps climbed up into the high 80’s. But that was at higher altitude. Carson City area (I’d imagine), would be much warmer.
A triathlon starting in South Lake has so much potential - too bad it heads to Sparks. I wonder how much carnage there will be in the descent down route 50 at 45mph around the sweeping turns with a cliff to your right… I know you’ll be in aero the whole time cranking out 300 watts and hitting 50mph!
I guess I’m willing to change my tune a bit. My current thoughts:
This is a course suited to HIM distance, not IM. The extra 56 miles on the bike are a boring tack-on, and the last half of the run is practically a hamster cage (they have changed the first half of the run to be out’n’back along the river, where it’s shady, cool(er), and pretty, not to mention near-flat).
Since there’s such a stigma against non-WTC IMs and registrations are notoriously hard to come by, I think they should ditch the full and just run the 1/2.
As a 1/2, is it a challenging course? Nope. Is it beautiful? Yep. Is it a PR course? Holy shit yes. It’s a net downhill of ~2000’, and it’s practically guaranteed to be strongly downwind based on our prevailing winds around here. They could market it as the fastest, most beautiful HIM in the country, and it could gain status as a destination race.
I’ve heard rumors of a North-Tahoe based full-distance race that would be striving to match the old WTT in terms of difficulty. Now that gets my attention
