Excessive yawning

Anybody else suffer from periods of excessive yawning ?
Once or twice a day, over a period of about 10 minutes, I’ll yawn as many as 15 times.
These are big “unhinging of the jaw” yawns. I don’t usually feel tired and after the spate I carry on as normal(ish).
My girlfiend’s worried I might inhale the dog or something.

I often experience the same thing…after reading a post from the Lorax.

Happens to me while running sometimes. No idea what’s going on.

If you are ready for it, do a google search on this. I am an admitted hypochondriac, so reading things like (“excessive yawning is a symptom of MS”) sets me off.

There was a relatively recent study done by psychologists indicating that yawning is a reaction to the need for cooling the brain (opening the mouth wide to let cool air in) and can postpone the need for sleep (also a brain cooling procedure). Interesting, if true.

Probably the most comprehensive thread I’ve every read on the subject, including mention of vagus nerve overstimulation or magnesium deficiency, can be found at:

Lots of posts, but worth a read…best of luck.

I’ve felt it, but only after I’ve done some higher intensity efforts and it always seemed to me that is was simply my body responding/ adapting to the harder work…as if it was an overt sign of increasing fitness.

these are precursory signs of overreaching/overtraining. the levels of tryptophan (*) (an amino acid) that reach your brain are much higher compared to other bcaa. your body is simply telling you that you are about to reach fatigue. so, give yourself a pause if you train hard.
this is from readings and personal experience.
cheers,
ace

(*): as a matter of fact, for an anectodic (?) side of this explanation, turkey is rich in tryptophan and it’s a reason why people feel sleepy/drowsy after consuming turkey (take thanxgiving for example :-)). google ‘tryptophan’ and ‘fatigue’ for more info…

Do you by any chance experience migraine? Excessive yawning is a very common precursor to a migraine episode. I know that when I experience a period of excessive yawning that I will have a migraine within 24 hours or so.

Thanks one and all for your responses.
No Schwingding, no migraines, only seem to get headaches when I’m hungry or thirsty.
I’ve a feelng it’s mainly associated with low blood pressure or heart rate. Another possible symptom is getting up quickly and almost fainting after just a few steps.
Perhaps beer will cure it ?
