What are some of the periodicals (magazines) that we read? Here’s my list:

I think what we read can say a lot about what we think. You can probably see by the list why the majority of my opinions are centered where their at

for me Economist, and not much else now, did read 220 triathlon magasine in UK, but moved to Denmark, can’t afford FHM,GQ etc now and most of the stuff here i can’t understand!
sports illustrated and ESPN the mag - letting subscriptions run out. I can get all the sports news and articles I want on espn.com.
esquire and playboy - very similar to each other, both high quality, but playboy has slightly better editorials, articles, and interviews. also playboy’s pictorials are usually great - very sexy but tasteful. esquire’s cover is usually their best picture in the whole mag, while playboy’s cover is just a little tastes of what’s inside. Esquire usually has a ton of advertising you have to skim though in order to get to the meat, but at $10 /year (12 issues), it is still one of the best deals around, though.

Socialist Worker (just a little joke for the texans) speaking of texans, actually as an aside there was an article in the telegraph here this week saying that they are not teaching contraception as part of sex ed in Texas schools, at the same time TX has the highest teenage pregnancy rates in the US. Is there a connection prehaps? whilst I accept in SOME homes kids will get the info and parents want the right to teach their kids, what about the kids that are not getting that info?

Not all every month, although several are on subscription. Some I get semi-regularly as the issue takes me.
Wow, some of you guys list up so many periodicals, I am really impressed!
But do you really read them all (apart from the Penthouse and Playboy “readers”…and don’t tell me you read the articles…:-))? When do you find time to read them all? At the coffee table at home, while sitting in the doctors waiting room, the rest room, at the barber shop/hairdressers, at work, metro, train, in your car waiting for the traffic to roll on?
Well, I live in Borneo, and don’t bother with getting satellite TV. I read a lot, keep some for the long plane rides home. i read in bed occasionally, and sitting outside with a drink in the evening. Wife does the same and we talk about what we read.
Beats sitcoms.

So what’s the secret?
Getting rid of Television or moving to Bornea to enjoy a relaxing lifestyle?
Probably a mix of both.
After living in the US for 4 years and being subjected to the quantity of ads on tv (25 minutes per hour!) I just couldn’t justify spending that much time watching. I bought a tivo, and found I spent half the time I used to watching tv, and read the rest of it. Never channel hopped, just watched what I was interested in, when I wanted to.
Out here, our channels are more limited, and you still have the advert problem, so I decided that as long as I have internet access I wasn’t too bothered about having tv. I do miss discovery channel now and then though. To make up for it, we bought a projector and built a screen and now have a nice little home theatre. DVD’s here are all pirates and cost about $3 each. You can buy some tv series on dvd (been watching 24 and 6 feet under) and I can always download recent stuff if I want to.
We find we average about 1 hour per night at most of tv, and a couple of big screen films a week.
I’m enjoying it more, now I’ve cut out the crap.

Good on you Freeflyer. We have several non-commercial channels in Germany still, so those are the channels which are less interrrupted by ads. They are the ones with the best informative programs. The ad- interruptions on our commercial channels don’t seem to hit the peak of 25min/h as yet, so it is still sort of bearable.
I have to admit though that my reading of periodicals is very limited. Maybe it’s because we’ve got little kids. Most of our periodicals are torn in pieces before I get to read them:-)) In fact, we once suscribed a “parental/ educational” magazine, but canceled the subscription after only 6 months. It didn’t take long for a lady of that company to call us and politely ask why we cancelled it. The only true reason I could tell her was that with 2 lttle kids we don’t get to read all the good educational advices anyway…so maybe they should have started off writing an article on how to find spare time to read their magazine and educate your kids at the same time. The lady on the phone didn’t ask any further questions and still found it quite funny…
Ok sorry for the highjack but how did you come to live in Borneo? I will make the assumption that you like it there so just wondering if you moved for a job or retirement or just because it was a cool place to be?
