Every wonder what your cat does when wandering around the neighborhood?

Well, some guy found out. He built a tiny digital camera package and hung it around his cat’s neck. He set up a controller to take a picture every 2.5 minutes. The link below has the results.

Man, I love the Internet.

Cool. We have five cats, four of which are outdoors quite a bit. Always wondered what they do out there. Despite putting bells/collar around their necks to warn birds and other potential prey, they still manage to bring the odd mouse home.

Gee, and here I thought all they did was come into my yard, tear up my gardens and shit all over them. Well, it’s nice to see they do something else (hide under cars?)

I don’t mind if a cat brings a mouse or a squirrel home, but it sucks when they bring birds or snakes home. I think it’s really cool that they got a picture of Mr. Lee near snake. And knowing cats, I’m pretty sure that most of your cats have figured out how to stalk prey without making their bell rattle.

My now-deceased cat brought home a full-grown rabbit. Into the basement through the cat door in the window. Alive. In the middle of the night. Did you know that rabbits scream? Quite startling at 3am when you’ve never heard it before.

They guy that I got my kitten, Katana, from had another cat. I can’t remember her name but she was one hell of a hunter. She would regularly bring back rabbits the same size as her. Caught snakes, squirrels, rats, birds, etc. One time, he told me that she was stalking deer in a field. Yes, a tiny little cat stalking deer.

Another story that I heard 2nd hand was someone had a cat that was quite a hunter. It caught a baby rabbit one day and brought it back home into the kitchen. This guy’s mom saw it and was saying “Ahhhhhhhhh, how cuuuuuuuu. . .” and about that time, the cat bit into the rabbits head and crushed its skull with a very loud “CRUNCH!!!”.

Oh, I’m sure rabbits do scream. Doesn’t surprise me at all.

My cats aren’t great hunters because they are indoor only cats. I just don’t let them roam around the neighborhood because it’s too dangerous for them. However, they love chasing moths and flies in my house so their hunting instincts are somewhat satisfied. The biggest prey that they have ever gotten was a gecko in my house. They tend to invade during the summer. I know that my cats were very happy with that kill, though.

Check out this website, this dude chronicles everything his feral cat, Jeff, kils and brings to him as a present. Needles to say, Jeff is quite the harbinger of death…

Yeah, the sounds a rabbit makes while in pain is quite disturbing. It is really unbelievable the volume they can generate based on their size. I cannot imagine waking up to that from a dead sleep.

Damnit, that site is blocked at work.

Mine don’t either because they have a nice big screen TV of nothing but birds.

You *so *need to use that as your background for a position critique thread.

I have quite the little hunter. He brings home all kinds of things right through the doggie door. My favorite was the LIVE Robin he brought into the bedroom at 5 a.m. and proceeded to play with until I realized the Robin was IN the house not outside my window.

Fortunately the bird lived but it took about an hour for my heart rate to get back to normal.

Your cats would love my dogs… the lizards invade the yard every year here as well. My oldest Sammi, takes great joy in catching them, gently, bringing them into the house and releasing them. She then follows them for hours and hours, never hurting them. Eventually I’ll catch them and release them back outside.

The funniest was the time my big one, Socrates, came through the door with one riding on his back. It hopped off onto the first house plant he walked past. I don’t think he even noticed.

P.S. How does one become a member of the Odwalla mafia?

These are all “fish” stories to me until I see some evidence… like this: http://www.mr-lee-catcam.de/

What else has he brought home? For some reason, I love hearing these stories. I live vicariously through people who have cats because except for that unlucky gecko, mine haven’t caught anything more than a moth.

My absolute favorite e-mail “pass along” is the comparison of the excerpts from a dog diary and excerpts for a cat diary. It just seems to sum it all up nicely.

Day 983 of my captivity.

My captors continue to taunt me with bizarre little dangling objects.

They dine lavishly on fresh meat, while the other inmates and I are fed hash or some sort of dry nuggets. Although I make my contempt for the rations perfectly clear, I nevertheless must eat something in order to keep up my strength. The only thing that keeps me going is my dream of escape. In an attempt to disgust them, I once again vomit on the carpet.

Today I decapitated a mouse and dropped its headless body at their feet. I had hoped this would strike fear into their hearts, since it clearly
demonstrates what I am capable of. However, they merely made condescending comments about what a “good little hunter” I am. Bastards!

There was some sort of assembly of their accomplices tonight. I was placed in solitary confinement for the duration of the event. However, I could hear the noises and smell the food. I overheard that my confinement was due to the power of “allergies.” I must learn what this means, and how to use it to my advantage.

Today I was almost successful in an attempt to assassinate one of my tormentors by weaving around his feet as he was walking. I must try this again tomorrow – but at the top of the stairs.

I am convinced that the other prisoners here are flunkies and snitches. The dog receives special privileges. He is regularly released - and seems to be more than willing to return. He is obviously retarded. ** **
**T****he bird has got to be an informant. I observe him communicate with the guards regularly. I am certain that he reports my every move. My captors have arranged protective custody for him in an elevated cell, so he is safe. For now… **

I was just going to post that! I love that site. :stuck_out_tongue:

His name is Alex or Allie for short and he LOVES to hunt.

Two weeks ago my daughter and I are sitting at the kitchen counter and I see him come through the doggie door with a thing in his mouth. It is too big to be a mouse. Stupid me I say to Taylor “don’t look, don’t look!”, of course she looks and screams. At the same time I am thinking “oh my god, a rat”. So… chase Alex who proceeds to run under the bed with his treasure and start playing with it. Go get the broom, try to push the ‘thing’ out from under the bed, Alex then proceeds to start playing with the broom, ‘Taylor is yelling get it out of here, get it out of here’. Finally manage to push the ‘thing’ out from under the bed and find out it is a baby bunny. A good size baby but a baby none the less. It is dead. Take the bunny out and throw it down into the wetlands behind the house.

Alex goes out, retrieves the bunny and brings it back in the house. No lie! This time dead bunny goes in the trash.

Just another day in my life at the zoo…
