Ever want to ride the Cadillac of bikes? Here's your chance

NEW YORK (CNN/Money) - You can now buy a new Cadillac for as little as $500. The catch? It has only two wheels, one seat and you have to provide the power.

General Motors Corp. has started licensing its luxury car brand and logo to Kent International Inc., which has created a Cadillac Bicycles unit and is producing a line of mid- to high-end bikes. The bikes cost $500 to $1,900, according to the company.

At least one Toronto-area Cadillac dealer is giving away a Cadillac bike worth $615 to those who buy any traditional four-wheel Cadillac.

Officials with Cadillac said the licensing agreement is part of a strategy to attract younger buyers to its luxury cars.

“The more unexpected brand contacts we can have, the more surprising it is for the consumer and the more chances we have to break through preconceptions of what they think they know about Cadillac now,” Doug Schumacker, Cadillac’s accessories manager, told the Detroit News.

Kent, a New Jersey-based family-owned bicycle company, has created a Cadillac Bicycles unit to handle the new product line.

“Our target customer is someone not necessarily bicycle-brand conscious, but brand conscious,” Ron Lippner, Cadillac Bicycles general manager, said.

General Motors already licenses the Hummer name to Montague Corp., a company that supplies bicycles to the military. The “HUMMER Tactical Mountain Bike” folds for easy carrying in a backpack, according to an announcement released by GM in March, 2003.

Yesterday, I saw a Hummer w/ 2 Hummer MTBs on a rack on the roof. All 3 vehicles were spotless and gleaming, as I’m sure none of them have ever been anywhere near off-road.

What a f’n poser. They are DESIGNED to fold so they can be easily transported. And that jackoff had 'em on a rack on the roof, so everybody could see them.

Back on topic - ask Trek/VW how that whole co-branding thing worked out…

Does it ride like a Cadillac? Slow, heavy, poor handling and way too shiny?

I would prefer a Lotus bike or a Porsche bike, if you have to name it after a car. I want it stiff, I want it pleasurable, I want it manoeuvrable, just like my dick. I don’t want a bike that behaves like a beer belly of a rich old man.

Whenever I see a hummer with a bike rack on it, I think, “How the hell do you get a bike up there? A ladder? A crane?”

I see it’s been quite some time since you’ve driven a Cadillac.

Caddy won the Grand Touring class at the SCCA runoffs this year. This is not your grand daddys caddy.

My main car is a Lotus super 7. It is the nearest car you can buy that drives like a Formula 1 car. It is the most pleasure you can have with your trousers still on. It goes to 60mph in less then 4 seconds. The handling is superb. I sometimes take to the race track. My other machine is a Ducati motorbike, but it can’t go as fast in corners.

For triathlon races I go in my wife’s boring Volkswagen.

I have this car for 10 years now. Only use it on the weekends. I prefer cycling to work on my commuting bike (Specialized S Works Transition).

So I doubt there is any American car that will ever come close to my driving machines.

“My driving machines” - nice. You rant about the “engine” for a bike, and now your “machines” that you race. I’m sure you would beat M. Schumacher in your Super7 and he in anything else (Corvette Z06?)

I’m surprised your ego fits in the door of that that little car

Dodge Viper: 0-60 in 3.8 seconds.

Chevrolet Corvette: 0-60 in 3.7 seconds.

Ford GT: 0-60 in 3.3 seconds

Since when is $1,900 a high end bike. My entry level tri bike cost $1,600 with no race wheels.

I thought the same thing. Triathletes have a skewed view of bike value. $1500 is about as low as you can find. High end for me means $3500+

I guess this is what it is suposed to look like.
A little disappointing to say the least.
