OK, so here’s the setup…I decide today to go out for an “easy” 50 mile ride after doing Rock and Roll Man in Macon last Sunday (should have paid more attention to that “1/2 IM Recovery” thread). Its hot and humid (85, 90%), and the wind is straight out of the south at about 15 mph. And the only way to start this loop I want to do is due north (there is no other direction to really ride from where I’m at). No problem, I’ll just spin easy and then rage back into the wind. And that’s pretty much how it goes, for the first 35 miles. When I turn on the road that is straight into the wind, the sign back to town says “25 miles”…whoops…10 more than I was planning on doing. Still, not a big deal, I think. Did 56 hilly miles last weekend…this is all flat…shouldn’t be a problem. After 5 miles into the wind, it has pretty much turned into a sufferfest. I stop at a gas station and buy some more gatorade, hoping that recharges me a bit, but not so much. At mile 52 or so I have to take a break…I find the perfect spot at, I shit thee not, a cemetery. Which is about how I felt. Sat for about 6-7 minutes, felt better, got back on the bike, and…immediately felt shitty again. My legs had absolutely no snap in them at all. I think I was doing about 15 mph average for those last 20 miles. The last 5 miles or so I all I wanted to do was get off that damn bike and sit in the cool shade somewhere. Starting to feel a tad dizzy and nauseous from the heat. Finally got to my hotel, showered, and then slept for almost 2 hours. Its about been about 4 hours since I climbed off my bike and I still feel a little wiped out. Gonna be a couple days before I’m going to want to ride again, I think.
Every time one of the idiots in a car decides to run me off the road I think ‘what’s the f@cking point of coming out here and playing chicken for the sake of keeping myself fit’.
Yeah, I’m already over it…it rained while I was out there, so I had to clean my bike…rubbing her tubes, caressing her derailluer…we’ve made up already.
To answer your question, I sure have. It was the day a teenager with a brand new license and driving an oncoming car while talking on a cell phone hung an unsignaled left in front of me as I was coming down a hill. She took out my bike and the better part of my left leg. But I got even. I took out her windshield with my head.
Possibly low on sodium. I’ve had that exact feeling before. You can’t understand why you feel so shitty when you’ve been eating and drinking plenty. Try some salt tablets next time.
