River City Tri in Logansport, IN was a ton of fun Saturday. It was unfortunate that lots of folks stayed home because of the storms and rain. Beautiful course albeit a little soggy. I’ll never forget this moment. We have about five miles left on the bike course which runs through, what else, farm country. We come around a curve and there is a blockade. About 150 black and whites. No…cows.
One of the local livestock operators decided to move his herd to the next pasture…across the road. The opening to the new pasture was down the road about 50 yards. A farm hand was at that point with the road roped off to keep the cows from going past, and therefore kept us locked in. Like all good participants on a bike course, the farmer tried to keep the herd to the right…and some of us, I’ll be the first to admit, not thinking, came up alongside to the left. How stupid of me. All it would have taken was one of those cows to bolt over and I would have notable road kill. Got kind of exciting for a couple moments.
The farmer was very apologetic and said he forgot. He admitted getting something about bikers going by that morning. Never know what you may run into doing this stuff.
