Etching plexiglass?

Does anyone have experience with etching plexiglass? i am thinking of creating some signage this way…

i have more experience glass - mostly casting glass. i did some etching once but it was a while ago and i know i used a chemical to do it. can’t remember exactly what…

No idea really, but some idea’s.

Why not just “Sand” etch it? Tape it off and use sand paper. Might not leave perfect edges but a good durable tape and some finesses might get the job done. Sand blasting is a semi industrial option. PLexiglass is tough but scrathces pretty easily unlike glass. I have no idea what the glass etching chemicals woudl do to plexiglass.

I’m pretty sure the glass etching stuff contains hydrofluoric acid (HF). It’s a paste that you paint on, right? I’m not sure it’ll do anything to plexiglass. How about using a router? You could use it to cut grooves of whatever depth you like, and then go back and fill in the grooves with paint. Alternatively, you might could use one of those etching pens but I’m guessing that the groove that would cut would be too narrow for signage purposes.

I think even a dremmel would work, but if i can use chemicals and get a really consistent, fast result, that would be excellent. I should probably just go over to Hobby Lobby and see what they say.

I think a dremmel or router is your best bet. Dealing with enhanced plastic instead of glass means that chemical reactions could be a LOT more interesting.

Hand-tools are a pretty safe bet here I would think.

Have fun,
