Pearl Izumi makes a backpack for that purpose. Works pretty well. Even has a rain cover built in.

I commute with a Deuter pack. the mesh back is really nice on the bike since air moves around you. I love it. It’s slim and stays secure. I can put computer, swim stuff, lunch and rain clothes in it with no problem. Best $100 ever spent on a pack. no doubt.
I have 2 awesome bike backpacks–both mentioend by other posters. My Pearl Izumi one can hold a lot of gear (and is great to use at races, too). Used if for a 30 mile round trip commute in Germany–lots of cool and rainy weather, so the rainfly was great. Computer sleeve was awesome when I was in grad school. Also have a small Deuter bag–useful for when I just need a few things–and doubled as a diaper bag when my daughter was little. Both bags are over 6 years old and still going strong. Neither is cheap, but you will get your money’s worth.

I second the question. I’m about to commute in 36+ degrees every day and need a pack which will not allow either rain in or more importantly; sweat, through the back panel. Any clues?

How about some sort of messanger bag like all the guys in New York use all year long in any weather. I’m not sure their brand of choice but i have one by Timbuk2 and it is rugged, with a thick canvas layer lined with plastic.
I really like my Chrome metropolis messenger bag. It’s made for riding on the bike, and is very weatherproof. It’s big enough even to use for a transition bag. I actually prefer it to a regular backpack while riding. They’re a little pricy though.
