Epicman Story

Hey boys and girls…thanks to those that came up on June 9th for Epicman in Lake Placid. Story is now up on www.xtri.com

Dev-

Excellent read bro!

Your writing style is very colorful- in a “NHL meets WWF meets Jim Rome’s Jungle” sort of way !

I totally agree that one needs to create an Epic Day in a grassroots level.

For one thing…its free, and secondly because its there.
My personal Epic day this season was a 105 mile bike/17 mi run brick in 90 F weather. I loved every second of it.

This was 2 weeks out before my 1/2IM( Musselman).
My run tanked at that race, probably didn’t recover in time, but, thats OK too since it was my B race for the season.

I learned a lot from that brick.
Especially since it went against all the grains of training protocol.

It was my Everest to try.

And thats what its all about anyway…No Guts/No Glory

Me wants to an E Dot for 06 : )

Great Story! I was fortunate enough to have read it a couple days ago in ‘Transitions’*. I think its great to see these sorts of things happening, and I’m wouldn’t be surprised if this grows exponentially with all this positive exposure.

*Transitions is the name of the magazine that comes free with an OAT (Ontario Association of Triathletes) membership.

Epicman is my “A” event for the year. It is more important to me than any race or any Ironman, cause I get to help a whole bunch of dudes get ready to kick ass in their big race.

Out of this year’s Epicman Alumni, we had 6 Kona Qualifiers and 10 Ironman PB’s. Not bad for a free poser training event !

Looking for opinions here:

First of all EpicMan sounds great. I will be racing IMLP next year but will need to qualify at Muskoka. I assume the training day will be a go again next year and I think it will be invaluable to train there at least once. Question is, would I be crazy to take part in Eman then race Muskoka the following weekend. In 2003 I finished in 3:00 flat, I would be trying to qualify in M25-29.

Thanks for the advice, Ian

Ian, I did Epicman on July 9th, ran 30K on Jun 11th and Rode 6 hours on Jun 12th and on Jun 19th went 3:03 at Muskoka and qualified for LP (rolldown, but still got a slot). If an old guy can do it, you can go sub 3.

Ian;

Unlike Dev. I only have a certain amount of “good” runs in me. So if I had to qualify at Muskoka I wouldn’t do the run.

Next year I probably won’t do the run (I’m doing IMLP) , but I am planning to stay the whole week for a mini-camp.

Cheers!

Trevor

Trevor…what…no run ??? That is unacceptable. You and I know that Epicman is more important than Ironman LP :-). I’m gonna hang the finisher medals out on my car mirror as a carrot to get you out on River Road…

Those medals better be made of metal Dev !!

I ain’t runnin for plastic.

For the amount you pay for entry the finisher medals are pretty damn nice. Mine is hanging right next to my IMLP medal. Actually it looks a lot nicer.

I am PISSED I couldn’t suck it up and finish Epicman. I wanted one of those medals so bad. Next year will be my Epicman year.

…the medals are made of wood :-). Hey, its not about the medal, its about the braggin rights :-). I might even have to hand out Epicman Kona slots in 2006. Make sure you show up for the rolldown at McDonalds with your Cheque for $000. No credit cards accepted

Markus, you have to design your plan to peak for Epicman. Then LP will be a cakewalk after that :-).

"…the medals are made of wood :-). Hey, its not about the medal, its about the braggin rights :-). "

Can’t argue that~

Dev,

Great story as usual… For those you are racing IMLP next year this is a must you have to schedule it on your training calendar. It’s an E-dot event… What’s E-dot Excellent Training day with a bunch of great athletes that are willing to help you all day. They will kick your butt, but at the same time they will ensure that you finish the day. It’s unbelievable how they day goes so fast when you are surround by these guys…

I’m sure next year there will be more 100 people lining up for E-dot Experience!!!

Alex

Great write-up Dev! Didn’t Kus do that sillyness with you kids this year? I didn’t see his name mentioned in the article or roster.

So - when is Epicman '06 tentatively scheduled for? I had planned on going up there at least once to pre-ride the bike course, so I might as well pre-swim and pre-run too while I’m there. And of course, hopefully hang in to secure the coveted E.Dot finishers medal

I had thought about mebbe doing Eagleman in early June, but Epicman is closer, cheaper, and sounds like more “fun”.

Kus kicked our asses during **IronTour Lake Placid. **Going up Whiteface mountain Stefan realized that he had a second smaller chainring on his bike. He was shocked to find out it was there.

Kus also biked from NYC to Lake Placid to watch us race at Ironman Lake Placid in July. Aparently he forgot that he had a small chainring and rode the big ring all the way. First day 200 miles, second day 120 miles, third day he biked 100 miles watching us race and ran 10 miles.

He has the full on Udo Bolts-Erik Zabel East German pain threshold and work ethic.

Epicman next year is likely going to be on Thursday June 8th, although I am going to put some pressure on to do it on Fri Jun 9th as it works better for lots of my American friends (stay back and do 200 miles of extra riding on the weekend). The reason why we have it on Thu is so that the Ottawa dudes can get home and be ready to ride the Rideau Lakes Bike Tour (www.obc.ca) on Sat and Sunday. I never do Rideau Lakes, so I don’t really care either way.

Ah, I’m such a noob - I got **IronTour LP **™ mixed up with **Epicman LP **™. I got confused since they both have the same RD.

<< Going up Whiteface mountain Stefan realized that he had a second smaller chainring on his bike. He was shocked to find out it was there. >>

And Stefan is a self-proclaimed “lousy climber”, because he is “too big to climb”.

Since I’d probably only be able to get one weekend pass (if that) from the Boss, and since Epicman gets you bigger bragging rights AND a finishers medal, I’ll probably opt for trying to attend that.

LOL. He had 23-11 on but only road 39X19 all the way up. The 21 and 23 are only used for real emergencies.

He is a lousy climber and went 59.xx on Whiteface. I think Stefan only uses the 21 and 23 when the teeth on the 17 and 19 shatter off the cassette from the force of hauling a 200 lbs body up a 12% grade.

Murphy’s Law…see you at Epicman 06. Just to clarify, there is no race director, just event director (ie, it is not a race) :-).
