Enough to gag a maggot

…so if you have a weak stomach, don’t look.

Every time I read something like this, or see someone who is “morbidly obese” I ask myself “How can someone let themselves get in this condition?”

People can’t get like this by themselves. They need a lot of help.

Sad, really pathetic. It’s sure a strange world out there.

Every time I read something like this, or see someone who is “morbidly obese” I ask myself “How can someone let themselves get in this condition?”

Last June I went to Disneyworld with my family. My wife and me were amazed by the number of severly obeese people in wheelchair. We’d guess that 90% of the wheelchairs (or scooters) were occupied not by handicaped people but by people who were to fat to walk.

We were also amazed by the number of older kids (10 and older) in strollers. Trust me, my 6 year old son walked the whole day just like we did. Not once did he complain.

She grew to the couch, let them never say I grew to the couch.

Only gonna get worse, kids don’t even have to kick their scooters.

She didn’t leave the couch for four years. Obviously others were bringing her the food that enabled her behavior.

The version of the article I read was that criminal charges are being considered. It will be interesting to see how that sorts out.

After seeing lawsuits won for people who spilled coffee on themselves and winning…nothing would surprise me.

the husband is insane to have let this go on. He, or someone(s) were enableing big time. Do you know how much a person has to consume to remain that large?

He LET her poop and pee on herself for YEARS. And he lived with that? The children lived with that (assuming the children are theirs)?

It’s insanity, and goes beyond what most of us understand. It was a combination of severe mental illnesses that allowed this. It is repulsive and unimaginable.

And the obesity is sickening in the country. it’s so horrible that sometimes I wish I didn’t have eyes.

I’m a manager at one of the major airlines out here in HI, and I can tell that our Honolulu-to-Seattle flight usually has 5 to 8 wheelchair passengers that have to be put on. Just from my own personal count, standing in the jetway watching my people put these passengers on, I can tell you that 90% of them are waaaaaaaaaaaay, waaaaaaaaaaay overweight, if not morbidly obese.

Somebody enabled them, and let them engage in behaviors that made them that way. Or they didn’t seek the proper medical help when they should have.

One of our most famous native Hawaiian singers out here, Isreal Kamakawi’wo’ole, died of morbid obesity back in '97. He was up past 800lbs or so when his heart finally gave out. And he’d been up to a thousand pounds before he lost a little weight.

Sad.

I’m agreeing with you. I’m just saying that most times, there’s somebody behind this person helping them put that food in their mouth, for whatever misguided reason. It’s still a completely personal decision to engage in any risky behavior, but plenty of parents have been forced to face the fact that they started their kid down the road to morbid obesity by feeding them soda pop and twinkies when they were just toddlers, because they just didn’t want to be bothered preparing healthful snacks and meals.

If you thought that one was bad, check out this guy.

I’m right there with you on the issue of who is the root cause. However, when your wife has literally not gotten off the sofa for 3 days you stop wiping up her excrement and tell her to get her lazy butt off the couch. If she won’t do it, don’t help her! Get some professional help even, but don’t help someone continue on the road they have chosen.

If an alcoholic asks you to buy him some alcohol do you do it reasoning that you are not contributing to the problem? If you knowingly contribute to the problem, then you are taking some of the blame. Note, some of the blame. The woman is still the root cause of the whole mess.

I’m with you. When my wife and I got married (and she’s consistent about maintaining a health and fitness program), we both made the other promise that we’d nag and beat the other one into getting on a treadmill or running track or whatever if we noticed the other one beginning to slide into health or weight management problems.

Plus, we always give each other constructive criticism when it comes to our weight and such. She’s been my best “second opinion” when it comes to race preparation and training regimes.

I agree with you totally (except the part about not having eyes). There is certainly enough pathology in this family to go around. I think people make a series of poor decisions, sometimes it’s the best they can do due to depression and other physical and mental limitations. That being said, there comes a point in which mobility is impaired enough that you can no longer get off the couch and move around. What happened between that moment and the moment in which this lady became a part of the upholstery is the problem. I am amazed she lived as long as she did stuck to the sofa. I once treated a lady in the burn unit where I worked for pressure wounds because her rolls were rubbing so bad on each other. Her paniculus alone weighed around 100 pounds. It was terrible for me and really painful for her.
