Last night my boyfriend hypothetically asked me if I preferred to have money spent on an extra karat for a ring or if I preferred to have that money go towards the purchase of my new bike. Without hesitation I said a new bike. He replied that my priorities are messed up. Huh? Am I so deep into my triathlon obsession that I am unable to see how this response means my priorities are messed up.

I tried to convince my wife to let me buy her an engagement bike instead of an engagement ring. Yeah, that didn’t fly. But I guess I’m the real dummy, cause she got the ring and has gotten 3 bikes since then.

I’d rather support the likes of Gerrard and Tom D. than the Debeers cartel. Diamonds are HIGHLY over-rated.
It’s all about what’s important to you. My wife would’ve killed me if I’d spent big bucks on the engagement ring. I bought a very high quality 1 carat stone and had it set in a custom band. She still thought I spent too much. I don’t know why a woman would want the rock of Gibralter hanging off her finger.

An extra carat (I assume you mean the size of the diamond, rather than going from, say 14K gold to 18K) would get you an entire bike (with top components and the best known wheels), unless the quality of the diamond is really poor or he’s getting you a chip instead of a stone. A 1carat G VS2 is around $6,000, and a 2 carat G VS2 is like $20,000 more. From .5 carat to 1.5 carat is about $10,000.
The biggest ring on the block is important for some girls, and for some it isn’t. There’s nothing wrong with your priorities.
He wasn’t too upset after I convinced him I wasn’t saying I didn’t want a ring but that I don’t care about the size of the ring. And if the ring came with the guru I’ve been dreaming about, well, I’d be about as happy as a girl could get.

Screw Debeers. They’re the pricks that just decided an engagement ring should be the equivalent of 3 months salary, up from two. Get the ring that will make you happy, not someone else.
And the natural state of carbon is graphite, so diamonds really aren’t forever…
no no no - I would have said the same in a heartbeat. Rings and bikes are apples and oranges. An extra karat might mean a few extra ohhs and ahhs, but is there a difference between a $500 commitment and a $5000 commitment? there shouldn’t be. A $500 bike and a $5000 bike - I would hope so. I can see how he might feel slighted if he views it as him vs. bike, but does he want your proirity to be the size of your ring? You are the prize here, and I would think you would be more valuable to him happy on a new bike than thinking about a new bike every time you look at the dang ring. If your priorities are messed up then so are mine!

No, a second carat starting at .5 is about $10,000. The first carat is around $6,000. The next carat added to that will be another $20,000. Don’t ask what the third carat will cost you (actually, it’ll be maybe $35,000 more).
