Energy Drinks - Hammer

Since GPush is out of business I am on the lookout for a new drink. Anyone try the “Sustained Energy” by Hammer?

SUSTAINED ENERGY
*“The Legendary Ultra Formula” *

Unless you complement your carbohydrate source with protein, your body will start to digest its own protein (muscle tissue) for energy after about 90 minutes of hard exercise. So when your training takes you beyond the range of HAMMER GEL alone, you can rely on SUSTAINED ENERGY with its 7:1 carbohydrate : protein ratio. SUSTAINED ENERGY contains a superior blend of complex carbohydrates, a precise amount of protein, and a few carefully selected micronutrients that all work synergistically to provide consistent, long-lasting energy. With SUSTAINED ENERGY, you’ll have 100% confidence in your fuel, even during your longest and hardest training sessions and races. Without any added flavoring or sweeteners, it has a pleasant neutral flavor.

Since 1992 SUSTAINED ENERGY has stood the test of time in every conceivable endurance and ultra-endurance event. No matter how difficult or lengthy your exercise or race is, SUSTAINED ENERGY will come through every time, and keep you going mile after mile, hour after hour.

I use it for anything over 2.5 hours and pre-race for shorter events. I have been trying out the new HEED from them as well instead of using Gatorade and likig it so far. The Sustained Energy is “neutral” flavored but I use Crystal Light to add flavor to it as I dont like the neutral taste. SE and e-caps are basically the core of my long distance diet. S.E. is pretty good stuff but unless you have a prior addiction like many long timers, I’d try Perpetuem first. Perpetuem tastes better (in my opinion), mixes better, doesn’t spoil as fast and is just plain better. Of course this is assuming you’re racing or training over 2 hours. I’d try thier H.E.E.D. drink for shorter racing and training. Sprint or Olympic H.E.E.D. and 1/2 or more Perpetuem. Try to find someone to give you a sample to make sure you like it first. I think both are acquired tastes.

I started using Hammer products last summer at races up to half-Ironman distance. I found SE easy to prepare and digest, though you’ll want to add something for flavor. I mix with one of Hammer’s flavored gels.

I haven’t tried Perpetuem or their new electrolyte drink yet. I’m excited to give HEED a try since I find endurolyte powder mixed with water somewhat less than appetizing.

In my opinion, nothing comes close to this. I use it for events and trianing longer than 2 hours. I have also tried Perpetuem and they seem to be basically very similar.

You will find that there is really no taste with the Sustained Energy. I simply use Hammer Gel to sweeten it. It’s is by far, the best energy drink for me.

I have switched from GPush to Hammergel, H.E.E.D, and Perpetuem.

I like all of the products - my only suggestion is to mix the powders the night before, that way it is all disolved for your workout.

I have had no problems with any of these products.

I have a love/hate relationship with the Sustained Energy. I love how it works but I hate how it tastes once it gets even a little warm. I have tried a lot of different drinks and keep coming back to SE, it seems to be the drink that I never have problems digesting. I like cytomax a lot for shorter races because I like the taste and it works great but for longer stuff I end up getting pretty bloated from it. Also it is infinitely better than gatoraid which I tend to get sour stomach from and find that after a few hours I feel like my blood sugar is on a up and down rollercoaster. At least SE works consistently, I tried flavoring it with hammer gel but I still didn’t like the taste but I will have to try the crystal lite and perpetuem yet. Either way give it a try on some of your longer training rides and it will give you an idea if you like it.
