Endurolytes/suceed question?

i’m looking for the range per hour (or mile) of these products that you are using. I’m a heavy sweater and in a 1/2 IM or full IM i’m taking in about one cap per mile. I recently finished a 1/2 im and took in about 11 caps and was still cramping some. I wasn’t dehydrated based on my fluid intake at each aid station and my urine at the end of the race. These were endurolytes that i raced with. I have used suceed at other races. Thanks in advance.

is this a joke post? a couple of things: endurolytes and succeeed are very different dosages; one cap per mile, assuming the run, make it 6 caps per hour, seems a whole lot; then 11 caps after the races seems really weird; then…they have never definitively connected cramping with salt intake/lelvels…so given how far off your practice is, you gotta be kidding…read the labels on what you are taking then do some reading elsewhere…

I am not sure specifically about Endurolytes, but when racing longer than Oly I take Lava Salts at a rate of two caps per hour. I think that’s about 800 mg in addition to what is in my drinks and gels. My sweat rate is about 1.0-1.5 lph if it’s hot. I have never had cramping problems.

sorry dude… but this isn’t a joke. taking 5-6 endurolytes per hour is not an “joke” amount. i’ve read the labels and read articles here before and it’s not out of the norm. if you don’t have an answer, it’s ok, but do a little reading yourself before you answer these posts.

It is true that salt intake is certainly not the panacea against cramping.

Sodium loss can vary a huge amount from one individual to the next. Some athletes can lose up to 2000 mg of sodium under the worse of conditions. You just need to arrive at your optimum amount based on trial and error for specific environmental conditions and intensity effort.

The 11 endurolytes for the HIM, was that just for the run or for the whole race. On hot races I take up to 6-7 endurolytes/hour, am a heavy sweater and have had no cramping promblems. Maybe somthing else is causing your cramping.

I am a pretty heavy sweater and I was camping bad during the run of a 1/2 IM, I was taking in about 4-6 endurolytes/Hr. After the race I had a very fast +40 yo triathlete who has finished in the top five of his AG at Kona (I read into this that he may know a thing or two about dealing with heat and racing fast, at least for his body, I will call him Mr. Speedy) He said he will use 4-5 endurolytes/15 min, that is 16 -20/ hour.

This is not a Joke, to the guy that thought it was, The bottle of Endurolytes (which I have in my hand) says to “Take 1-3 capsules per hour during prolonged exercise in hot weather. Extreme conditions may warrant higher dosages.”

The problem is that each capsule only has 40 mg of Na, as has already been stated in this thread some people (in extreme conditions) can lose up to 2000 mg of Na/Hr. While I do not believe that you can replenish all of that, the suggested range of 1-3 capsules (40-120Mg) does not even come close. So Mr. Speedy (as I will call him) taking 16-20/hr he is still only ingesting between 640-800 mg of Na, this combined with the other Electrolyte replacement on the course (gatorade, Heed, etc) May come very close to the 1200 mg/Hr that I appear to lose.

Any derogatory tone in this post is not ment for the OP, it is for the person who thought this was a joke. With a little research (and using the search button on Slowtwitch, I think you will find that this is a very valid question and in no way a joke.

sorry dude… but this isn’t a joke. taking 5-6 endurolytes per hour is not an “joke” amount.
I think she was referring to the fact that the difference between Succeed and Endurolytes is about 5x per capsule in dosage. So if you were randomly changing one-for-one you would be doing way different things. Check out the Hammer Nutrition white paper on their site. The thing I have about Endurolytes is the huge amount reccomended. You can crank up to 11 and hour (and as someone said above 20 and hour), which seems to me to be swallowing too much delivery medium for the amount of Na you are getting.

I have given up Endurolytes completely. Based on my sweat rate and the salt covering me after a hot ride/run, I needed to take a whole bottle for every long ride. It became too much trouble. For those who don’t lose so much, Endurolytes might work fine.

Now I use the infinit powder and specified high electrolytes. (before that I would mix table salt and potassium capsules and other stuff into Gatorade).

I still take a couple of gels - e-gels - and they have high electrolytes compared to others. Regularly (and before a race) I drink V8 juice and take potassium supplements.

Also cramping is not only due to electrolyte depletion, could be tight muscles, muscle fatigue, running further/ faster than you are trained to run…

Just some ideas:

Taking more on the run is not the answer. Taking more on the bike leg is. I am a pretty salty sweater (I have permanent salt stains on the band of my Polar watch), but 1-2 per hour on the bike with eLoad or other sports drink seems to set me up quite well. On the run, 1 every half hour seems to be pretty good. I understand that this pattern is less than you are taking in right now.

I think that the other part of the problem may have to do with muscle tension and the quality of your taper. Are your muscles loose at the beginning of a race or do you feel like a drawn bow? I attribute the drawn bow feeling (however satisfying it may be to appear to be in top shape) to being over trained and under-relaxed to perform. How can you expect to fire your muscles all day long when they are already tense. How about some extra relaxation, massage and a better quality taper?

Finally, where are your cramps?

Best of luck.

Thanks all for your input. Here’s the deal. I was using endurolytes (as mentioned) for this 1/2 IM and not suceed. I carried a bottle of perpetuem/hammer gel/endurolytes mix which totaled about 1000 cals w/4 scoops of the endurolyte powder which is equiv. to 4 caps. Unfortunately i launched it at mile 5 of the bike and was dependant on the coarse menu which was basically powergel (some w/extra sodium). Anyways, i knew this would already put me in the hole from the bike and had 12 caps of endurolytes at T2 in a holder to start the run. Temp. was about 85-86 degrees and like prev. mentioned, i’m a heavy sweater. Now i’ve done 4 full IM in the past and the most endurolytes i’ve taken in (w/o problems) is about 15 total. My concern was taking in 11-12 caps on the run only this past race and this possibly still not being enough. The more and more i read about infinite, the more is sounds like something i should look into.

“taking 5-6 endurolytes per hour is not an “joke” amount”

Without commenting on the comedic aspect of your salt intake, compare an Endurolyte to a Thermolyte. There is not a lot in the former. At 6 an hour you are way under .5 grams.

gotta experiment, I have smaller friends who notice an improvement and ar happy with 1-3 per hour. I found they really helped my off the bike and run cramps but am at more like 10 per hour for 1/2IM and up… I take about 2-3 per hour in a sports drink and the rest orally in the caps. Also, I’m talking about endurolytes, not Suceed. I’d take fewer Suceed per hour for sure.
