so, i have the opportunity to get a few things tested.
v02max, dexa, wingate tests done.
what are your thoughts on priority? i’m hoping i will get to have them all tested again in february or march as well.

I have a test for your endurance!!! http://theratsnake.com/ Sorry, just a little fun. I’ve only done VO2, it was a good guide, especially with my power zones on the bike and pacing zones for the run. Good luck, I hate testing!!
how did it help on your zones?
made them very specific. no guessing.
well for some basic guidelines, here is what team sky does:
none of those
And what the coaches behind the brownlees do:
none of those
both use measures of actual performance as their tests of performance, just done by doing the usual training and observing it.
made them very specific. no guessing.
So…if you lose or gain 8 lbs, do you change your zones?
John
I only changed them if I lost or gained 7lbs.
I’d do the DEXA out of short term interest and long term comparisons of bone mass.
it depends - what type of racing do you do and what are your season goals?
I have the opportunity to do vo2 tests for free but I don’t, because it won’t tell me anything actionable or particularly useful.
What I do, however, is a modified vo2 test to measure substrate utilization at my event race efforts (for me, that’s ironman). That gives me actionable data that I can implement in racing.
For all performance testing, I gravitate towards field tests (FTP test for bike, low HR run test, swim TT) which are both free and useful
jack,
you make a good point. i’ve gone this far without using this stuff.
the thing is. i’m getting it done for free. and i’m just curious.

Both vo2max and wingate primarily show you your “max” numbers. Who do you think is the more fit athlete: A, who maxes out at 75, but can hold 60 for an hour, or B, who maxes out at 70, but can hold 65 for an hour?
Perhaps the vo2 max test can give you some sort of inflection point that may be used to establish training zones, but as mentioned (and is being discussed in several other threads right now), a field test will give you the same answer with better precision.
I did a series of 4 vo2max tests as a volunteer for a university study. They were pretty horrible. You blast right past uncomfortable to terrible to nauseous/about to pass out. I wouldn’t do it again “for fun”. Did it tell me anything? The vo2 plots were similar, but not close enough that I would expect to get any actionable data for training zones…perhaps that is just my performance variation.
vo2 test is a good workout =)
