Endurance Nation and Firefighters

I’m looking at corresponding with firefighters who are currently using or have used Endurance Nation. Looking at finding a coach/program for next year without breaking the bank (I know you get what you pay for). I haven’t had much luck with some programs/coaches in the past 4 years. Thanks for the replies…

there are at least a couple of EN guys that are firefighters, I am not sure that they are constant ST dudes though. I know they modify the plans as they go 24/48/72 whatever hours at the house.

I am one of the EN firefighters. I work 24 on 48 off and basically you are constantly tweaking the plan to fit the training in around the work schedule. Occasionally I can get a run in on the station treadmill but there is no possibility for swimming or riding. Taking the plan’s rest days on my duty days works best for me. Although I rarely get the workouts in on the exact day, I almost never miss a session and I try to stick to the basic plan of the week. For instance, if the long run is after a rest day, I try to plan it out that way. If there are two rides back to back on weekends, I try to do two back to back rides whenever I can fit them in. I’m a decent swimmer without a lot of yardage so if I have to skip something it’s one of the swims.

EN is about self-coaching and getting the most out of limited training time. Fitting the plans around our work schedule isn’t any different than fitting any other plan around it. You will receive guidance about how to plan your week/month/year, but if you’re looking for someone to hold your hand every week and tell you when/how to fit it around your schedule you might be better off with more of a one on one type coaching relationship.

EN works for me and I am very happy with it. I made some big gains in my first year and am looking forward to more next year.

You guys don’t have a forever pool at your firehouse ???

Nope. They all used to have treadmills but some are unfortunately being replaced with ellipticals.

Either do we, were lucky to still have firehouse’s. We actually only have three firehouses with treadmills. The rest of the firehouses circuit breakers can’t handle a firehouse. Hell they can hardly open the firehouse garage doors without tripping a breaker :0(

Hi,

Thanks for your interest in our team. I recommend you create a free 5-day trial membership to see for yourself how we coach our athletes, provide support for them, and if you are a good fit for us. We have many firefighters, docs, nurses, and other people with similar scheduling challenges on the team.

IMHO, the EN method is ideal for people with irregular or non-standard schedules. It’s all about concentrating the workload - a feature that makes placement and shuffling of workouts relatively easy. I think that the typical AG athlete can easily lose focus when it comes to performing your average step and repeat plan.

The nice thing about a high-intensity focus is that you can adjust each workout to suit your day-to-day condition, and not end up shortchanging yourself. IOW, if you’re feeling strong today, you can simply extend your intervals and do the slightly longer version of the workout. Conversely, if you feel like crap tomorrow, you can simply ride the minimum suggested intervals then pull the plug knowing that you’ve still logged a good deal of work.

When a large fraction of your work is tied up in multiple high-volume sessions, shorting a workout can be a big setback, and rescheduling is usually a challenge.

Sorry just catching this now. I’m probably one of the EN/FF’s Chris was talking about. Feel free to ask me questions or do as Rich says and fire up a trial.

I’m lucky that I work at a slow firehouse. I’m on the 24 on 48 off. I can get any where from a 3-6 mile run in before work or run on the treadmill during shift. Every shift I try to at least spend at hour to hour & 15 min. on the rollers. On my off days I take care of my daughter so I only get 2 swim workouts done. If I’m lucky, on Tuesday’s during the season I can get a brick workout consenting of a 30-40 min OWS and 25 mile ride. BTW, I’m not an EN member.

Same here only we are on a 24 HR shift 3 days off. 24/72
And working at a slow firehouse ain’t exactly lucky :0)
