So I am doing an 80 miler yesterday with the bulk of the hills at the beginning this time (just depends on how ya do the route)… and at about mile 45 or 50 I guess my right knee starts feeling like it needs to pop, stretch something. So I stretch it. Then my right hip flexor starts hurting some and now we have small, about a 4 on a 1-10 scale, sharp pains in my knee and it becomes harder to press on the forward portion of my bike stroke. I rode the last 10 miles pretty much using my left leg for the strength and the other to just keep moving. I did run a hard 14 the day before and then had to sit the rest of the day and my right hip and hip flexor as well as IT band were kinda bugging me…
I have an oly on 7/15 and my irondistance race on 9/22. I go to the PT today to see what is going on. Will go to doc after the 4th of July if I need to.
Should I be freaking out? This week was supposed to be a “big push” week for me, aiming to get close to 200 miles in on the bike since I get a little time off from work, 45-50 on the run and about 15k in the pool.
I’m just nervous that now I won’t be prepared adequately?!?!?!?!?!!? YIKERS!
I’m sorry about your problems. Really you need to find out what is wrong…if it hurts I would bag the oly and focus on getting repaired for the IM race. Be smart!
Break the problem down logically. Does your knee hurt only after you’ve spent a lot of time on your bike, or is it a general problem that flares up when you run or swim? If it’s limited to your biking, especially after/during longer rides
, I would look to bike setup, starting with seat height and cleat position on your shoes. I’d hazard a guess that your hip hurt from compensating for your knee. Might also want to look at your gearing- make sure you’ve got a high enough rpm and that you’re not grinding your knees up from doing 30 rpms all day. If this is a more ubiquitous problem, time for a visit to the doc. Best of luck.
I did get my bike refit recently but have ridden on it a couple times. I have been having hip flexor issues and have been going to physical therapy for it. My pt is really good, so hopefully in less than 2 hours I’ll have something to go on.
I was stupid on Saturday in that I ran hard for 14 because I had to be somewhere and was determined to get in 14 miles, so I pushed hard then had to sit all stinkin’ day.
Hindsight!
Could be a lot of things ranging from serious to just your body saying slow down there buddy. Whatever the case its already done, so there is no reason to freak out now, just see a doc and move forward.
Just back from PT… checked it all out…inflamed and VERY tight right adductor (one on the inner thight)… stretch, massage, ice, be careful…“See how tomorrow’s ride goes” and go from there! So that is good newsl
