Elliptical Or Recumbent?

I’m thinking of buying my wife an elliptical trainer or a recumbent bike for xmas. Wondering if anyone had advice…she is NOT a runner/triathlete (but she is an amazing spectator)…she has mentioned the elliptical often, but I think she will use the bike more…simply because she can read or grade papers while she does it. My feeling is the elliptical would give a better workout…but as stated above, I think she would USE the bike more. Pros/cons to each? I’ve only got about $500 to spend. Thanks!

I have the low-line Precor elliptical…and really like it. My wife (non-athlete) likes it as well.
It was $1300.
I think you can get a good New Balance ellipt online for around $800. I like the low impact aerobic workout it gives. I sit on my ass for 8 hrs per day and don’t want a recumbant for more of the same.

Anyways, I’m glad I didn’t scrimp on the cost. I got it in 2001 and it still functions as new.

They’re both good aerobic machines. I think the ellipt is better for overall toning.

If she’s been hinting for the elliptical, then that’s what I’d go with. I wouldn’t get hung up on giving her the opportunity to do work while she works out. Working out is a reason to get away from work. (I don’t dial in for meetings or write briefings while riding)

Personally, I hate those recumbent machines. I’d go elliptical hands down.

If you can only spend $500, look into something used. It’s like buying a car, and you want something durable and in good condition.
