Elderly Homeowner Shoots Invasion Suspect Dead

Chicago - A man and woman in their 80s are unharmed but an assailant who broke into their home was shot dead by the elderly man Wednesday morning in the Garfield Park neighborhood on the West Side.
At 5:22 a.m., an armed suspect entered a residence at 623 N. Sawyer Ave. – the home of a man and woman in their early 80s, according to a Harrison District police sergeant.
When the suspect broke into the residence, he awakened the homeowner who then confronted the suspect, police News Affairs Officer John Mirabelli said.
The elderly man shot the suspect and the man and woman were not hurt, the sergeant said.
A spokeswoman for the Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office confirmed the death of a man from the Sawyer address but had no further information immediately.
The suspect was a man in his 30s, Mirabelli said.
A weapon was recovered from the scene, Mirabelli said.
Harrison Area detectives are investigating and the sergeant described the incident as a home invasion.
However, it will be interesting to see if Mayor Daley charges / arrests the homeowner for possessing a handgun within the city limits. A similar incident happened about 4 years ago in Chicago, and the homeowner was arrested and charged with possessing an unregistered handgun within the city limits.

So the issue wasn’t that the individual HAD a handgun. The issue was that it wasn’t registered. I see no problems with arresting him for an unregistered handgun.
No no…you cant HAVE a handgun in Chicago - period. But, the Supreme Court is just about to over turn that law base on the 2nd Amdt. So, what law does he follow? The US Constitution or the law that the idiot mayor decided to make even though it is un Constitutional?

If it hasn’t been overturned, then the law is still valid. He should follow that one. That said, I’m surprised a prosecutor would take this forward if the law is about to be overturned. Sounds like he has a great appeal if he’s convicted.

Chip not quite accurate - you can own a hand gun in Chicago but it must be one owned prior to the current legislation being enacted - so a grandfather clause was in there - but you are correct that post the legislation no private citizen can own a hang gun in the city limits- but this will be overruled at the end of June … yee ha…
