It is my understanding that you stop getting narrower when it affects your breathing or when it’s generally uncomfortable. However, mine are at the width that they came out of the bike shop at.

Unless you have access to a wind tunnel, it’s mostly conjecture and probably subject to many individual variables. I have read that once your elbow width is less than your knee width, getting narrower has little benefit. Since I don’t have a wind tunnel, I go with what feels right. I would never restrict my breathing or become uncomfortable without hard data showing that it is making me faster.
