Edmonton Triathlon Clubs?

Hi, can anybody recommend a good triathlon club in Edmonton AB? I’m moving there in Jan.

Cheers,

Nick

Edmonton triathlon club is probably best known club…training club with a social twist.

City of Edmonton also has a good Triathlon Training Program. Don’t have a link but you could call a rec centre to find out more.

PM me if you need more info…

terry has formed sort of a cult (but a very very good cult)…lots of members now and some great training sessions.

most of the “clubs” in edmonton are group training groups of coaches…i don’t know of many except the ETC that is a legitimate “club” in the same sense…although, mettleworks is a recognized club by the ATA and is therefore insured and stuff.

Cheers,

Thanks guys… I’m certainly not moving to Edmonton for the weather. I’ll check some of those clubs out. Depending on what kind of work I get, I’m also thinking of joining separate training groups through bike shops, masters swimming, etc…

Waypastfast is a good trishop in Edmonton so it would be worth stopping in and I am sure Cam could tell you lots about the Edmonton scene.

My bro-in-law is Ian Laxdal who runs the St. Albert tri-club. Whenever St. Albert is a nice place to live and they have an active tri-community there. Most people who live there work in Edmonton. If I were to move to Edmonton I would live in St. A.

There is a great swim group that is coached and free with entry at the Kinsmen Rec Center (50m pool). The pool is closed right now for renos but should open up by spring. There’s also a second 50m pool Cornation Pool (114 St and 112 Ave?). The U of A has two 25m pools… which I saw once.

Running in Edmonton’s river valley is awesome. They have the best inner city trails of anywhere I’ve visited or lived. Because of the 2001 World Track and Field Championships, Edmonton has two great outdoor tracks.

Cycling in and around Edmonton is really flat, except for the hills in the river valley.

Tri-Poser… when did you live in Edmonton? Oh… I guess you live so far north in Calgary it might as well be Edmonton or Yellowknife.

Training in Edmonton seems to work well for Paul Tichelaar and Chad Kozak had some pretty awesome duathlon results when he lived up there, so it can’t be that bad for training.

Swimming: I think Edmonton Tri Club is your best bet - that’s where I got my start (back when Roch Frey was the coach) and look at me now! I think they still have a drop-in fee structure, which is nice if your schedule is a little wacky.

Running: Live near the river valley and you’ll never be dissappointed - tons of variety, pavement or dirt.

Biking: Um, it’s ok, getting out of town is a bit of a bummer. A few of the shops have regular rides - I dropped in on United Cycles’ weekend ride a while ago, good group of people. The roads are ok, it’s not victoria, but look at the bright side, you’ll be wicked in head winds!

PS

Trev,

  1. You live in Calgary, granted you live on the outskirts of calgary, but not quite in Edmonton. So, you can’t really comment on Edmonton.

  2. In one posting, you’ve dissed all your training partners in calgary. Nice.

Um, I’m totally not the right person to talk to about motivation on the bike. I can’t even find my bike in the basement right now. I think it’s under my knitting stuff.
