Update from the Gran Fondo NJ, scheduled for northwest NJ Sunday morning:
Hurricane Irene Update:
Hurricane Irene is forecasted to arrive in
Morristown, NJ at 8:00am. on Sunday.
After coordinating and negotiating with the State Police, the 22 different municipalities through which we will be riding in Northwest New Jersey, and our volunteer support teams, we have made the decision to postpone the ride and all associated events until the weekend of September 18th -the ride itself will be on the 18th.
We realize that we are a “Rain or Shine” event, but a hurricane of the projected strength of Irene is unprecedented and brings with it a much higher level of danger due to forecasted torrential rains, high winds, and the potential for significant storm debris and flooding along the route.
Our primary concern is the safety of both our riders,
and our volunteers.
This has not been an easy decision to make, and we hope that
you will understand the dilemmas we faced in making it.

I’m guessing there won’t be any athletic events being held Sunday anywhere from Maryland through NYC. There are a bunch of triathlons in NJ that morning that just won’t happen (a big women-only event in Asbury Park says they might switch to a run-bike-run, but I’m thinking even that won’t happen).
This is a big-assed hurricane we are talking about. Just getting to and from the venues will be difficult.
I hope they let us know soon so people like me can get back home before Sunday. The email I got said run bike run race time decision. I hope if they are thinking on canceling it they just do it so we can get home and not get stuck.
Doing the world police fire games Sunday in NYC, right when Irene Is supposed to be in full force. Hope they don’t cancel it. Any tips for riding in wet conditions with 50+ mph winds? At what point is it too windy?
Good Luck Man
I’ve raced in windy rainy weather but not a hurricane. I’d try and talk your brothers into swimming in a pod for the 1st leg, wear a gortex windbreaker on the bike, run should be fine.
Let us know how it turns out
I love doing long runs when rain bands are moving inland. In a several hour run it will be sunny with a constant breeze and then it becomes really windy and rain and this repeats every 15 - 30 minutes. It is a nice change from the constant hot muggy southern weather.
I’ve done a 5k with a stronger storm moving in and it was great, but still safe. I felt like Jim Cantore for a brief few minutes as I could hardly stand.
Looks like most races on the east coast have been cancelled.
All be safe in the storm and not stupid. Pack your emergency kit. I lived in Charleston, SC for 7 years and spent lots of time in other areas of the coastal Carolinas and never used my Hurricane kit. I move to Chattanooga and discovered the kit was very handy during the April Tornadoes.
I am signed up for WPFG but am definately OUT. Work/family is keeping me from travelling but I am still racing locally this weekend (Saturday AM followed by a nice 3 hr ride). If you are interested, rent a car, race in Rhode Is…give a shout. If I had to guess they will be cancelling for Sunday. It has been a freaking mad house around here and since the track has bumped further west it has sent emergency planners into overdrive.
Fireman tri in west kennebunk, maine is “supposed” to be my first race of the season.
Irene is casting a long shadow on that.
Oh yeah and I’ve gone from mildly vexed that the P3 would not be ready for the race to wondering if I should go with my R3 or my 29er for the bike.
In '09 same thing happened with a hurricane off the coast during the race. They made a last minute switch to the bay which added about 150 yards of a run; but the swim was REALLY calm in that protected bay. No issues at all. Ill actually be there as a guard, so no worries ;^) No reason to leave your good bike behind; unless you really dont want to get it wet; the hurricane should not be there till the late afternoon according to models (not the thin runway kind, but the mathmatical ones).

Yeah, this is a big storm.
I just hope they don’t cancel IM Canada. (pink font).
I was gonna ride the R3 any way, that bike does really well in really poor conditions.
I guess the inland swim is a no go this year because of the tides, so it is all or nothing
gonna be interesting if they do green light the race.
There shouldnt be any tide problem with the cove…the race is about 1hr before high tide; and the reef really does not let a whole lot of the energy get through…even with a surge.
R3 should be fine riding. Just watch the corners that might have some washout on them and all should be fine.
Good luck with it. Unfortunately, I had to DNS for Chesapeakeman in 2008 after the hurricane ripped up the eastern seaboard and knocked out all power to that region. RR from folks who completed the race talked about riding through small lakes with fish swimming around their spokes.
Hopefully, you will have a safe, fun race and bring us some interesting information in your race report!!!
Almost 100% chance it will be cancelled. I feel your pain - in 2003 I was in awesome shape but to no avail…Hurricane Isabel had to ruin it for the entire mid-atlantic.
Bloomberg just announced that the city is rescinding ALL event permits for Sunday. Saturday events are being cancelled for “Area A” (low lying flood prone neighborhoods) locations, and any depending on police and/or fire support are subject to cancellation without notice.
Glad you came for the games. This is not a game. Strap your boots on and get ready to use your skills. We’ll need them!

I’m in The Bahamas and got hit by Irene pretty bad Wednesday and Thursday. Went out for a 2k ocean swim thursday morning when it was blowing about 75mph, no better way to remind yourself you’re alive!
