Ed Whitlock runs 2:54 in Toronto

The 73 year old broke his own record running the Toronto waterfront Marathon in 2:54. My buddy who ran a PB of 3:01 at age 48 ran with him for about 3 km. He said the man is truely incredible to run with, effortless, his feet don’t so much as make a sound.

How’s he do it?

I just posted about this in the “old guys kick butt” thread. A friend of mine that I used to run varsity cross country and track with in university was at the track to do a few 1000s about a month ago since he is trying to get back into shape. He said this little old guy came up to him and asked if he could run along. My friend (who is 39) thought that he’d be kicking the old man’s ass around the track but said he couldn’t hang on to him for the first one  Then he finds out who it is that he’s running with …

Well we were on the same course! He broke the record then as well-he looked effortless!

Amazing.

Ed finished a remarkable 26th overall. I take this as an encouraging sign that I have 30 more years to get my PB down to his level.

Ed was averaging 2-3 hour runs daily in his lead-up to the race and does almost all of his training by running loops of a local cemetary.
