East Wenatchee, WA

Anybody have any information about the area? I’ll be moving (for the 3rd time in the past 6 months) there at the beginning of March from So. Carolina and don’t really know too much about the area. Internet searches are pretty helpful, but it seems like this site has people from all imaginable backgrounds.

Also, if anybody is in the area, do you happen to know anybody that would be willing to rent a room to a relatively clean grad student who will be on a clinical rotation (hence why I have to move so often) for Physical Therapy school? I’d be happy to trade treatment sessions for rent!

Wenatchee isn’t too terribly far from where I live; about 2 hours. It’s an absolutely gorgeous area, but other than the fact that there are lots of orchards, nearby skiing and a growing wine industry, I don’t know much about the actual town.

I did a du there a few years ago. It was a small race but well done.

I go through or near there a fair amount, on the way to other places. There’s killer Nordic skiing about 2 hours north, up in the Winthrop area. You’re about a 4 hour drive from the IMC course. Leavenworth (the town, not the prison  ) is about 25 miles to the west, a cute town done up in Bavarian style and with good German food (or so I’ve been told by German friends). Leavenworth also has a few nordic ski trails and they used to have an actual but small ski jump hill. Hot, dry summers in desert-like terrain. Great if you like watersports in the summer. Several tris there every summer, and a few more up in the Lake Chelan area to the north maybe an hour, and the Grand Columbian Half IM is about 2 hours away to the northeast by the Grand Coulee Dam. Some very long stretches of road up and down the Columbia River for bike rides along Highway 97, and there are several organised century rides there every spring / summer / fall, although the road sees a fair bit of traffic - as I recall the shoulders are good in most places. Every April there is a multisport relay ( XC ski to downhill, to run to road bike to canoe) called Ridge to River - it starts at the Mission Ridge ski area and ends in downtown Wenatchee on the Wenatchee River. The race is a blast, as is it’s big brother - Ski to Sea up in Bellingham north of Seattle by the Canadian border.

The downtown itself is like a lot of desert towns, spread out horizontally rather than grown up vertically, so it doesn’t look like much, at least not to someone that’s used to big urban downtown cores like NYC.

well, if you live up to your page name, Dirtrunr, you are going to be in trail running hog heaven. miles and miles of trails. bring your skis, bike and trail shoes. Wenatchee is an outdoor paradise.

I live in Seattle but go over there to do the occasional road or mountain bike ride or climb. In the summer it’s about two hours from Seattle. Not much snow in town but the local ski hill, Mission Ridge, is pretty close. Good access to the east slope of the cascade mountains for various outdoor adventures. The valley is all orchards and vineyards so is pretty nice for road biking. As you get away from the river and irrigation, the landscape gets more desert like. The town has a large mexican population due to all the agri business. This causes some friction with some of the more regressive folk. Politically the town is pretty conservative compared to Seattle.

Man, now we’re talking. I was under the impression that there were a handful of outdoor type opportunities, but this has me excited. Now I just have to figure out somewhere to live besides the back of my subaru.

I’ve got a spare bedroom, you can crash free of charge. The commute is a bitch, though - Mapquest puts it at roughly 42 hours.
