East Coast version of Boulder Cntr for Sports Med?

Anyone know of one?

I need something like what they did for this tri/cyclist, basically biomechanical eval, pedal stroke analysis and bike fit.

I don’t know enoch, but I am glad to have found this blog entry, maybe there is hope for my knee problems.

here is their site http://www.bch.org/sportsmedicine/

Try the National Training Center. usat-ntc.com still works.

I really don’t think there is. People come from all over the place to have Andy Pruitt and Todd Carver do 3D fits here in Boulder. They are the ones who developed the system and to my knowledge they haven’t licensed out the technology. I had one done there a week ago, and they didn’t change much on my fit, but I think it is worth it to do one just to make sure. Anyway, it isn’t cheap for the fit, so why not come on out and have them do their 3D fit on you and stay and train for a few days?

Fitness Concepts, located just outside Washington DC, offers some of what the BCSM offers. We definitely do not have Andy’s 3D bike fit equiment. I couldn’t find a way to squeeze another $40K into the budget, but we do use a metabolic analyzer to measure oxygen consumption and ventilation and I have done extensive testing on pedal stroke economy. One major use of the analyzer is determining optimal stem height for a time trial or triathlon position. The lower a rider goes, the more aero he/she is, but at some point losses in pedaling economy will cost more than the aerodynamic gain. We have found that ventilation and oxygen consumption at a set wattage will increase gradually to a certain point and then jump dramatically. The lowest point before the increase in VO2 and Ve is optimal stem height. http://www.fitness-concepts.com/bike_fitting.htm

Specifically what are you looking for? Geoff is right, there is only one BCSM because there is only one Andy Pruitt, one Neal Henderson, and only one city in the world that will support such an awesome business.

Do you mind if I ask why you say that you need to get a fit like the guy on the link you provided? Are you having a specific pain or other problem that is being aggravated by your current position?

When Todd and Jeff (the same two who fit the person who wrote the blog) did my fit, the changes were minimal. This was good, given that I am a cycling and triathlon coach and do fits at a shop in Boulder. I decided to go to BCSM because I do not have the devices that are necessary to do the 3D style of fit at my disposal, and wanted ‘the ultimate fit’. What we ended up changing about my position during my fit at BCSM were things that could not be seen with the naked eye. When I initially got on my bike they said that my fit looked pretty dialed already.

After the initial 30 seconds of film were taken with me pedalling at 300 watts, they saw a couple of things that they wanted to correct. They added a 1mm Varus wedge on each of my shoes, as I had already installed 2mm on each side myself, in order to have a total of 3mm on each side. This corrected a slight lateral movement in my knees, confirmed by the second 30 second clip at 300 watts where the lateral knee movement was eliminated.

The other changes consisted of lowering my saddle by 3mm and pushing it back 3mm, and flipping my stem over. In effect, we rotated my position back a bit in order to open up my hip angle because I, like the fellow in the blog, have very tight hamstrings. I have since my fit begun to work on my flexibility, and the position seems to be working out alright so far. The new position is supposed to help increase my power output.

My big point here is that if you are having specific problems while riding and have already had a good bike fit done with a reputable professional fitter, then the BCSM is a great route. But if you haven’t been fit yet, it might not be necessary to see them quite yet. I charge $55 for a basic fit through the shop that I work with, and $125 for a fit with a Computrainer analyzing power while making changes to your position. And I can get you as close as a few millimeters away from the position the 3D computer analysis will put you in, for $345 less doing my basic fit.

I can also enthusiastically recommend Ken Mierke and Fitness Concepts for their bike fitting services in the Washington DC area. My mom was fit on her Felt S22 by Jason Goyanko, one of their coaches. And Ken is truly an elite level coach and physiologist. Also, from a performance standpoint, the Computrainer fit that Ken does will get you more speed because he is taking aerodynamics into account. They don’t really focus on aerodynamics at BCSM, as it really is a ‘medical’ bike fit.

Thanks for sharing your experience Geoffrey. I’d love to visit Boulder and ride those hills! Unfortunuately, until I get fixed, my riding is limited.

I am having pain in one knee, lateral. ITBS type symtpoms. The sharp pain has only occurred around 90-120mins into a ride. Some ache sometimes precedes it. Never happens when running, altho it’s possible running irritates it. I am flat footed.

I have tried many things over the last 3 months, including 2 basic bike shop fit sessions, and vists to 2 different orthos. I’m 6 weeks into twice weekly PT visits. I stretch and strengthen, use a foam roller and ice, and support inserts in shoes.

From what I can see, there is some in-out knee movement during the pedal stroke.

I am hoping an experienced expert can help me sort it out, maybe find or rule out a muscle imbalance or pedal/cleat position problem.

I’m considering picking up a cheap camcorder and tripod to do some slo-mo viewing myself.

Hi Ken. Thanks for posting your reply. I am sending you a PM here.

I do use video for fitting when necessary, but I don’t have the ability to do any computer analysis. It sounds like you may have a pronation/supination issue. I often recommend the look CX7 pedal or LeWedges to keep power production in plane with the crankarms and reduce stress to the lateral tissues. Good luck, Ken

Come on down to the NTC in Clermont, Florida. We have everything you need. Take a look at our website at www.usantc.com. Z
