Eagleman, June 2012

Need ST wisdom: When would you start Eagleman training, June 2012?

now’s a good time.

Feb 1, 2012. At least that is my plan…

Wow! Seven months out. That’s a lot to time. I was hoping for a few months more of kicking back and drinking beer!

Thank you. Hope you have a good race!

Triathlon is a winter sport that’s played out in the summer.

I agree, NOW! Like you, this was my A-Race in 2011. What do you need work on? Between now and December 31st, nothing intense. Figure out 3 very important things between now and then:

  1. Can you swim without a wetsuit?

  2. Can stay in the Aero Position on your bike for 50+ miles?

  3. Can you run the second half of the run? (The first half is all about fluids and staying cool at all costs.) The second half, well, “suck it up buttercup!”

Training for Eagleman is simple. Swim hard, Bike harder and run SMART!

Three tips for you:

  1. Swim OW with no wetsuit as much as possible.

  2. Time Trial on your trainer this winter in full aero for 2 straight hours.

  3. Complete 3-4 ten mile runs per week.

I worry about burnout, but you’re right. I’ll start base training tomorrow. One more beer tonight!

Dude, this isn’t a monastery, it’s triathlon-"one beer a day keeps the burnout away."™
.

Thank you for your thoughtful response to my question. These responses are the motivation I need: Tomorrow, Masters swimming at 6 am!

To answer your three questions:

  1. Yes, I can swim without a wetsuit and enjoy OW swimming. I don’t even like wearing goggles.
  2. I can’t stay in Aero for fifty miles, but will work on it.
  3. I can run the second half, just need to put in the miles.

Biking is my weakest leg of the race: I need better skills and more courage at times. I will shoot for Tip 2. I’m going to look into some bike camps and gain better skills. I’m actually comfortable on the Eagleman bike course. Would like to learn how to handle a windy course better.

Tip 3 might be a challenge but doable.

Thank you for the motivation and wisdom for my 2012 A-Race.

Cool! May I have two beers/day?

Thanks, you too. I will say that I don’t plan on letting my off season
training go to zero. I’ll probably do a baseline 5+ hours a week
over the next 3 months, with a good part of that swimming. Feb 1
is where I start having an actual plan with specific goals each week.

Nice Blog and Congrats on your Half Full Triathlon: Excellent swim and bike!

Sounds like you train smart.

Base training starts right now…or…if you are in the 40-44 ab training starts on June 11 2012 :0)

I

  1. Complete 3-4 ten mile runs per week.

In order to acclimate, it is best to do these runs in a climate with weather like that of the race. For example, the surface of the sun.

You must have done Eagleman in 2008! It was a hot one.

hahaha so true.

Biggest part of this race is managing hydration. Warmer swim, hot bike w/ little to no shade, hot run with nooooo shade. See you out there!

A few questions to anyone:

I assume Kona slots and 70.3 slots workout to top 1-2 per AG? Do guys usually take both, or can’t really say?Coming from the south, is it a good drive through Chesapeake up Hwy 13 or best to go around DC?I assume for camping you have access to school showers?

  1. If you mean rolldowns, from my limited experience they are very rare. I have not seen one, but I would expect the happen once in a while.
  2. Not sure, I live in the DC area so I come from that direction. I can say if travelling anywhere near DC, try to avoid rush hours times.
  3. Camping at the school does give you access to school showers. They were open for on the afternoon of race day. Very “old school” (a central pedastal with a ring of shower heads at the top, no stalls).
