Dura Ace question?

I’m sorry if this is a dumb question - I’m a tri-geek not a bike-geek.

Can my Dura Ace 9sp on my KM40 be “retrofitted” with another “cog” to make it a 10sp? Can my LBS just add the 10th cog onto the bike?

If so, how much $.

If not and that was a dumb question, I was just kidding… ha ha…

No can do, but you should ask yourself how much do you really need that extra gear. I’m one of the cynics about this who believe that 10 gears is mostly marketing.

Thanks Tex and CG. As it turns out, I am very happy with what I have.

If going from 9sp to 10sp was as easy as adding another “cog” into my cassette, then it might be cool to do. But you are correct that the additional gear is not worth the cost. This setup I have is only 1.5 years old. Maybe I’ll do it if I have to change the cassette in the next couple of years.

By the way, this was Claudias idea, not mine.

One thing that I’ve noticed is since the intro of the 10 sp, the 9 sp Dura Ace has dropped in price. I just picked up some DA 9 sp shifters from ebay for a psalm. If you’re planning on keeping the 9 sp for awhile, now’s a good time to stock up on spares.

No, you can’t just get away with just ‘adding’ another cog–I don’t think that could be done. The cost to do it right would depend on how many parts you get, the total price of the parts, and whether you would do the install yourself.

You would have to start with a 10-spd cassette (fits on to 9-spd hubs), then a 10-spd narrow chain to fit on the narrow spaced cogs, then new 10-spd STI shifters to run the rear derailleur. You don’t need a new rear derailleur as a 9-spd rear DA derailleur will shift through 10 cogs very nicely (same shift geometry as the 10-spd DA rear derailleur) IF commanded by the 10-spd STI shifters (this is critical). About the front derailleur, the narrow 10-spd chain will work (though sub-optimally) on the slightly wider 9-spd front derailleur, but, ideally, you would want to get a narrower 10-spd front derailleur to get “perfect” shifting. 9-spd cranks will work perfectly well with the rest of the 10-spd set up. Does that help?
