I’m going to be there for a couple of weeks in April and would like to get out for some (weekend) rides if possible, or, even better, hit up a race. Anybody gone riding over there and have suggestions on routes and where to rent a bike or have contacts with local clubs?
I lived in the Dublin Suburbs for 2 years. There is some great riding up in the Wicklow area. It takes less than an hour to ride there, and once there you can find endless country roads up and around the mountains. This is the area that the TdF route went through back in 98 or 99, whenever it was. The roads are narrow, but you get the typical European respect that you do not see in the US. The Wicklow pass is a great climb, you can get by Glendolough(sp) and the lakes in that area. There are endless loops to do. There used to be a Sat morning ride out of Celbridge, about 8 miles outside Dublin.
I’m not sure what my fitness has to do with my teammate’s question. What exactly is your point?
Didn’t catch that. Am a bit caught off guard that people would post questions for others.
Anyway, I second Wicklows, takes 30mins from citycentre (Liffey) to the bottom of the hills. Roads are rough but nature is stunning.
PhoenixPark or a Howth (pic below) loop are options for shorter rides.
Also heading South along the coast towards Greystones is pretty.
x3 on Wicklow. I lived in Ireland last year while doing a research project and hit up Wicklow a few times. However, the weekends are busy with cars and the roads are narrow and bumpy. Bring plenty of tubes.
