I train in Asics Kayano’s except for my speedwork (indoor track workouts) in a pair of DS Trainers.
I feel fast in the DS trainer’s. So when I was trying to set a PB at the Around the Bay in Hamilton this weekend I chose to wear the Trainers instead of the Kayano’s.
Had a great run, PB’d, yeah me!
But…near the end of the race and afterwards, my quads were fried. It feels much more like the day after a marathon than just 30k. (Note I’ve been doing lots of 2:30 hour runs)
So, is this just the difference between race pace and training pace or have my quads taken a much bigger pounding since I was running with the DS Trainers instead of the Kayano’s?
Should I train in the DS Trainer’s for all my runs instead of the Kayano’s or accept that I take less abuse in the Kayano’s and this is a good thing for racing long (ie. for my Ironman).
I doubt your choice of shoes had anything to do with your aching quads. It was the change of pace, maybe dehydration, maybe weather. On the list of possible explanations, I’d put your shoe switch on the bottom. IMO, what you’re doing with your shoes is a good idea. It’s what I do and have done for 15+ years. Nowadays, I run in the GEL-1100 and on my tempo/speed days, it’s either the DS-Trainer or GEL-Flash. As for your sore quads, stretch, ice and some light running should get them back to normal.
That’s the kind of feddback I was looking for. Pace was high, weather was crap and I didn’t drink too much. Glad to hear it’s a similar approach to someone in the biz.
I’m a Kayano/2080 & DS Trainer guy myself. Just ran my first race of the season (a 1/2) and went with the DS Trainers for the first time this year. Other than the typical post-race soreness, I haven’t noticed anything wierd. My guess is that you can chalk it up to the typical soreness of an early season race - not to mention that you cranked out a PR. Way to go!
hay shawn, i don’t mean to hijack the thread but i’ve got a ds trainer question for you.
i currently wear the ds trainer 8s and the nines are on sale now for $59 over the internet. do you see it being a problem buying these without trying them on? are they significantly different than the previous version? any info appreciated. thanks.
i saw them first on eastbay.com. then i did a google search
and found them in several other places as well including amazon of course. have a look. it’s not uncommong for last year’s models to be heavily discounted.
I’m not Shawn…but I have worn nearly every version of the DS Trainer (hence my post name)…and in my opinion…the DS Trainer VIII & IX are two of the worst versions. My favorites are the DS Trainer VI and I really like the new DS X. The X is fitting a little narrow up in the toe box…it’s a lot lighter…and the ride is so much smoother. I like the midsole profile on the X, it’s a bit lower than the VIII & IX. The heel to toe transition is much improved. I’m on my second pair of X…and it’s worth spending a few extra bucks to get the latest version… rather than “getting a deal” on the older inferior style.
Anyone else out there disappointed with the VIII & IX? I think you can still find the VI at Roadrunner sports.
Wow - I had no idea there were som many people with my shoe combo as well. I’ve used Kayano’s since version V and DS trainers for about 3 years. I have recently (this year) switched to a Mizuno Wave Precision instead of the Kayano for training. The Precision is bascially half way between the two (you guys know what I mean). I wanted to try this to see if there was not so much of a difference when I switch because those 2 shoes are so drastically different. Seems to be working so far…
Go over to Gordo’s forum (coachgordo.com, or byrn.org) and look at the thread titled “Gordo, Running shoes of choice”. Some of the issues you’re asking about are divergently discussed there.
