Drugs, sport and testing: Some notes

In reveiwing a lot of the recent literature on the use of banned and sometimes even illegal drugs to enhance performance here are a few thoughts for your conisderation/commentary.

  1. The motive for developing sophisticated drug therapies to enhance performance is significantly greater than the motive to detect them. Example: Successful evasion of drug testing will result in better performance/greater winnings. Successful detection of PED use will result in scandal, dissention and discredit to the attendant sport.

This is the primary discrepency in this system. There are significant incentives for NOT testing positive. There are no incentives for testing positive.

-Therefore: Substantial efforts devoted to the development counter-detection methodology/techniques and attendant therapies that evade detection would be substantially rewarding. While no empiracle data suggest these operations are on-going, it is reasonable to surmise the motive exists, as well as the technology.

Since the nature of these operations is inherently covert, and the very nature of their motive is objectionable to the general public at large, it is highly unlikely that (if such operations were on-going), that they could be definatively detected/revealed.

I got a free copy of Velo news and one of the US pro’s has come clean admitting EPO use even on the Saturn team. He raced on an amatuer Italian team and they had the stuff in the fridge with the Human Growth Hormone. He has started a clean team and is going to run it that way. Hope these guys can keep up.

This is an unsubstantiated OPINION:

I would suggest that the detection of any future use of banned PED’s will only be detected when:

  1. The perpetraitor is apprehended through some type of formal, law enforcement investigation.

  2. The perpetraitor confesses.

Beyond that, I would suggest the capability to detect such activities is no longer adequate.

I think the UCI, WADA, USOC, IOC, etc. think that detecting banned substances makes them look good, even if it makes the sport look bad.

I love the BALCO thing. All started and run by the bass player from the funk band Tower of Power. He was awesome, by the way, together with their funk drummer and hot horn section. “Back, back, back, back, back on the streets again.”
