Drinking sports drinks when not training?

The only beverage I drink is water. That’s it, just water. Except when riding when I drink Gatorade.

Lately I’m noticing I’m thirsty all the time when not training. So I drink. And then I pee. A lot. So, should I be taking in an electrolyte drink during the work day, when not training, so that I retain some the water I drink? I think all the water I drink is just passing right through, perhaps due to a lack of electorlytes lost during training?

The problem with plain water is that it can flush your system. Try adding a cordial to it, so that your body has something to break down

I do drink a regular bottled sports drink when not training. Not all the time, but about once a week. I find I need it most when I’m on a nightshift.

There’s no harm* in drinking these things when not training, as your body will just waste what it doesn’t require.

  • I am not a doctor. This is pure speculation on my part.

I drink a lot of water too…and when i do I have to pee a lot. I’ve started to take a few salt tablets a few times a day (I keep a bottle of them next to the sink so they are readily available when I get a glass of water and a bottle of them in my car so if I buy a bottle of water or fill up a bottle when I’m driving I have some) and this seems to help me not pee as frequently. I have also noticed that when I don’t take the salt tabs I crave salty foods. Sometimes I’ll just have a handful of salted nuts with a glass of water if I’m a little hungry too. I don’t like drinking sports drinks when I’m not working out because it just seems like too much sugar, so the salt/electrolyte tabs seem to help.

Before a long race in the days before I use nuun tabs, they have no calories, electrolytes, a light flavour and taste good, so you can drink and not worry about flushing too much out…
