I have read both Tom D’s and his wife’s subtle ads for winter cycling gear, but I still have a question. In this picture Basso is wearing cycling shorts over his tights. My question is what is under the tights? Do the tights have a chamios? Do you go commando + tights then shorts? Usually I wear tights over my cycling shorts, I assume this is the wrong way?
Wow, somehow Basso in Disco kit looks very strange. Back on topic, he’s probably wearing leg warmers. In fact, if you look closely, I think you can see where the leg warmers end under his shorts, just below the earth in the Disco Channel logo.
As for tights, I think you have the correct application: wear them OVER the shorts.
yes they are. I have some leg warmers that are warmer then my tights (which I never ride in b/c I like the versitility of leg warmers) I have some old PI’s that are fleece lined and have ridden them in 37 degrees and rain while still being warm more than less.
I live in MN so I feel I have some expierence. I ride in leg warmers if there is a possibility that I may take them off and just wear shorts. Leg warmers also seem less constricting to me. I do the same with arm warmers. If the temp fluctuates much during the day when I am riding, I will use the arm/leg warmers as an extra layer to add/remove as needed even if I am wearing tights/long sleeves.
Wow, indeed. Two days later and he has the whole kit, bike and everything.
To the OP, Leg warmers and arm warmers should be part of every cyclists kit. The great thing about them is they are very versitaile and can be taken on and off easily during a ride without having to remove other layers and then stored in the back pockets of your cycling jersey( You have a few of those I hope).
Full tights, with perhaps some form of wind panel on the front are good to have to for colder weather riding.
In the picture, I am guessing that it is not too cold as Basso does not have any shoe covers on, but he is still covering up, as seems to be the protocol with many professional cyclists when it is much below 20C. I note this seesm to be the reverse of triathletes who seem to be trying to wear as little as possible
I’d assume (since it’s only been two days) that he simply grabbed “a” bike and was going for a casual spin. I’m sure they’re working on getting him set up right.
I agree on 2 things: bad fit and Basso looks very odd in the Disco kit.
Also, I don’t think those are leg warmers. See the Zippers down by the ankles? Also, they are awfully long for leg warmers. Those look like full on tights under the shorts.

Now you’ve opened a can of worms…can’t wait to hear loads of age-group triathletes criticizing the bike fit of one of the best road riders in the world based on one picture taken at an odd angle

All the leg warmers that I have ever seen, including the ones made by Nike, and PI, have zippers on them.
Ah, thanks guys! Zippers it is. And I agree - we all love commenting on positioning on this board (but it seriously does look odd), even for one of the greatest cyclists in the world. LOL!

Leave it to ST. Everyone here is an expert on something.
However, it’s like the pot calling the kettle black. The reality: triathletes as whole have no basis to judge the fit of someone such as Basso. Just stand at the side of the road of any big triathlon. There are so many bad( terrible, actually) fits and positionings out there it makes your head spin! Some people should get a reward just for finishing the bike in an IM with some of the fits/postionings I have seen!
Yup, first thing I thought was, man, that bike appears too small for him. My guess is this was a publicity shot and he just grabbed what was available. I keep my bike clean but that thing looks like its on its madden voyage.
