I have been following this story for a while now because I work in IT and security space and the idea that the Feds were able to take down a Tor site was pretty novel at the time. Quickly though, I found myself entangled in the details of a man who would go from being a middle of the road average dude to a full blown kingpin, even ordering the murder of colleagues. The irony is in the ending. His downfall very closely matches the storyline of Breaking Bad’s final season.
If you Google you can find a lot of other details. There’s an affidavit given by the security analyst with the FBI who actually busted down the doors of The Silk Road. That affidavit is an interesting window in to the world of the Fed (in other words they don’t have a magic button to catch people…they got lucky).
Tor is largely funded by the US government. Many people forget that. There was a major vulnerability on a version of Firefox bundled in the Tor browser that allowed for people to become “de-anonymized”. The feds openly exploited this to bust pedophiles. I think they called it Operation TorPedo (clever). They actually busted a guy running pedophile sites and then took over his servers and placed the malicious java code on his servers…so that visitors would get infected. Love it…look it up.

I admit that I am naive about much of the nefarious aspects of the interwebs and that I don’t truly understand bitcoins, but what I really don’t get is once someone bought their drugs on silk whatever website, how did said drugs get delivered? Mail? Did people shop with “local” dealers or were heroin and cocaine packages being shipped over the seas?

Both. You could get them delivered via FedEx or courier.
