Double Wammy: appendicitis & hernia!

just got home from surgery (unexpected) and I was told no working out for 6 weeks because of the appendectomy. My initial report was hernia but we got the CAT scan just in case. It turned out my suspicions were right. So, now I can’t do anything for 6 weeks according to the doctor. The sad part is I am trying to get back into shape. I have gained 20-25 pounds since my last race in Nov. '10. Besides obviously eating wiser (which I am doing) what would you reccommend?

I am assuming

  • walking on incline
-would you ride the bike at gym easy?

help me burn calories

anyone else with hernia surgery (I think I got it by helping my buddy bring in his super heavy treadmill!) or appendicitis surgery? What were your results.
Thanks.

Sorry to hear. That blows. But 6 weeks will go by before you know it.

If it were me I’d start loosing weight now. I’ve found my ability to lose weight is independent of whether I’m exercising. Yeah exercise is good, but it also makes me frigging hungry and I eat more. It’s all about eating well and controlling quantities.

Plan for for just 1-2 pounds per week though. Don’t starve yourself. Your body is healing and needs energy.

Look up desert dude diet. It worked great for me.

Walking ok. Ride stationary bike and start out easy and build yourself up. Have also had patients run after 1-2 weeks… Was this done with the laparoscope (small incisions) or “larger” incision?? It will be sore. All part of healing…

I had an appendectomy a few years ago, but mine was done with a laproscope. Did they have to open you up to fix the double trouble?

I have 3 small incisions (one in belly button). I guess a lap?

I haven’t had the other surgery yet. I actually got a pic of it, kinda neat. Full color. I saw my before and after shots of my appendix.

Sorry to hear that, hope you heal fast !!
I just did a fruit cleanse. Ate only fruit for 4 days and lost 6-7 lbs. Did feel like shit running on the third and fourth days though.

Have been doing them with the laparoscope for almost 20 years… 1st week pretty tough. Then get better 2nd week and so on. Ridiculous you should wait 6 weeks!! You will not rip/tear anything up. May feel like it but you won’t. Listen to your body but yes it is ok to ride/run. Would wait 2 weeks to swim. Don’t want to submerge incisions under water…

Sorry to hear about your health problems. You may want to review the advice from your surgeon. Post-op from a lap-appy shouldn’t require that long of a recovery. You could start running after 2 weeks. Just don’t strain/lift weight. My H is a trauma surgeon. He had a marathon runner have surgery that raced 3 weeks post op. Just depends on fitness and strength. You don’t need to wait that long. Good luck.

This is pretty much what my doctor told me. I had the surgery on a saturday, was back on the bike on the trainer the following wednesday, started running on thursday (I think), and did a 16 or 17 miler on sunday (8 days post op). I healed pretty fast. BTW, I set my marathon PR 5 weeks post op.

I had my appendix out two years ago right about this time, and since it’s nowhere near the race season I wouldn’t push it! I had the same as you, three small incisions.

I couldn’t hardly even walk the first day or two at all. But at about 1wk I was riding VERY easy on the bike trainer, basically the only thing I could do. Tried to jog on the treadmill after 2wks but there was no way, took me about 4wks I think to get in a real run without pain. Swimming was just as bad or worse, took me at least 4-5wks before I could even comfortably do a simple stroke.

I’d say use the bike trainer after a week or so, as long as it doesn’t hurt. Maybe very easy on the stairclimber after like two weeks if it doesn’t hurt. Chances are recovery time is gonna be different for each person, hopefully you’ll be better faster. But still no point in pushing it when you’ve just had your guts pulled out

Just think, you already lost like a few ounces by removing an organ, so you’re on the right track!

Ok, so sure this sucks, but reality is that you admittedly have gained weight since 11/10. Not exercising for 6 weeks in not going to kill your fitness. Take the 6 weeks, and focus on cutting calories and drop half of that extra weight-focus on a sustainable diet which allows you to loose the rest extra when you get back to training-it is winter, time for rest and base work anyway. My personal experience 2010-2011 winter had a metatarsal stress fracture-didn’t run for 3 months, came back after 3 months and had a half marathon PR, then a labral tear in my hip this summer-requiring surgery, did not run for almost 5 months-ran 5k PR, I am almost 40, and I consider the most important thing about my “time off” was that I did not gain any weight, and was only 5 lbs heavier than my Ironman racing weight. Good luck, take it easy-don’t screw things up in the next 6 weeks even though you had a laparoscopic appendectomy, and hernia repair your tissues need time to heal-doing too much too early will lead to being out a lot longer than 6 weeks. Sorry for being long winded…hope some of it helps.

good advice guys. That is good to hear. I was getting depressed. I fully realize that the weight gain was my fault. Was lacking motivation and drive, but the “new year” helped me turn over a new leaf and I was mentally moving forward. I am glad to hear that things could be better for me much earlier. I have been resting since my surgery on Friday morning, and have taken off of work for 2-3 days. I am focused on eating smarter, and looking forward to dropping weight.

Thanks!
