Double-strength Infinit?

I recently started using Infinit. I like the stuff and it’s working well. The only problem I have is that I can’t carry enough of it to get through my longest rides so I’ve been switching to gels once my supply runs out. Has anyone tried mixing Infinit at double-strengh and nursing the bottle for twice as long? I know this is common with Perpetuem and other products, but Infinit’s instrucitons don’t explicitly suggest this like the others do.

Anyone tried it? Experiences?

No problem. Works great. I used 2100 concentrated Cal (14 scoops!) in a 26 ounce water bottle as my sole bike fuel for IMCDA. You can either mix with water from aid stations, or take a swig of the concentrate and follow with water.

EDIT: Actually 12 scoops/1800 Cal. See post below for full details.

Works fine. SOP for me for longer events. Lotsa folks do that.

I’ve put enuff in one bottle to last for a ride of over 8hrs/150 miles.
(I think I had 2k cals in that bottle, and it was pretty sludge-like at that blend)

I’ve used 1200+ cals in a bottle (x2 bottles) for IM.

And 750 cals in 1 bottle for HIM.

You can make it as concentrated as you want, you just need to take much smaller hits each time, and follow it with adequate water.

On my long rides I mix a double in a 24-oz bottle and then dilute it between two bottles with purchased water about halfway through the ride. Works fine for me.

Cool. I’ll give it a try. Any mixing suggestions to avoid chunks and floaties?

Wow, how did you mix 14 scoops in one bottle? I’ve gotten 8 scoops in a bottle and I thought that was pushing it.

What ML says, but I tend to max out at 700 cals or so and I can take it in straight with no water as long as there is no solid fuel or gels being taken in at the same time or within 20-30 min.

  1. It’s a huge 26oz bottle that I marked for mixing.

  2. The concentrate is milkshake consistency.

  3. Once an hour, (Yes, that’s a 7 hour IM ride if you do the math…) I would mix a dose from the concentrate bottle with water from an aid station into my aerobottle. So for the whole ride, I carried 1 bottle of concentrate on the frame, and 1 aerobottle up front. No salt tabs, no gels, no bars, no Endurance Formula, no behind-the-seat bottle launchers…

  4. I have some protein in my 300 Cal/serving per mix. I find that it mixes without clumping without doing anything special. But, to avoid creating foam from the protein, I start with water in the mixing bowl, then stir in scoops of powder with a spoon. If it gets too thick, I add a bit more water. Then I pour it into the bike bottle and add a bit more water to make 26oz of mix.

EDIT: Oops, forgot one detail – I put the first hour directly into the aerobottle before the race, so I only had 12 scoops (1800 Cal) in the concentrate bottle.

OK, for you guys who use 2 bottles for an IM, do you carry them both on your bike (via bottle launcher or whatever)? Or trust the special needs station to get you your second bottle?

I trusted special needs for my last IM, but it was an Indy with only a few hundred participants. I’m a bit nervous about counting on special needs with 2000+.

What did you guys do?

I go 2 bottles mixed to 133% strength, one on the frame, one in the chamber (launcher). I pick up two at special needs and I’m done. Mix the night before and freeze the special needs bottles.

not to get too scientific but how do you have any idea how much to swig or how many swigs to take?

Thanks,

Mix it up in the blender.

I use a Zefal magnum bottle (33oz) and marked off 8oz incremements. I usually set it up for one hour per 8 oz but it is possible to make it more concentrated and get 1:15 or 1:30 from an increment. I also keep track of how many times I concentrated the mix and take an appropriate amount of water with each hit of concentrate. Before I did the bottle marking thing I could be way off in my rate of consumption.

I’m not very scientific about it either. I try to make sure I take a swig every 10-15 mins or so, starting at sometime 20+ mins into the bike. Goal is to be half way thru the bottle when I’m half way thru the distance it’s s’posed to last for.

I also try to have the last of it a good 15-20+ mins before I’m done riding, so it has a chance to clear my gut before I hafta switch over to running.

One ‘trick’ I use is to always take a hit from my feed bottle near the bottom of any extended climb, once my momentum has bled off. This keeps me from spiking my wattage at the start of the climb (which if you have a PM is very easy to see yerself doing, and without which is hard to tell by RPE), since it’s pretty hard to hammer a climb when you are sitting up and sucking on a bottle.
Plus, yer going slow enuff that being aero is moot, so it’s an opportune time to sit up and take a nice hit from the feedbag.

I did a HIM RR ride today, used 600 cals of Infinit in my fuel bottle, and the aero bottle w/ water.
Worked perfectly, and I ran fantastically well off the bike too.
It’s a great system. I’m a big fan.

PS - for IM: one bottle on the bike, one bottle in special needs. Works fine, I was 2 for 2 with this last season, and no whammies. Nice to have a cold bottle waiting for ya at the halfway point : )

If you double infiniT, it doesn’t change a thing.

I did exactly this for IMLP last year. One bottle mixed for the first loop (I did 7scoops in a bottle) on the bike frame. Second bottle mixed the same way and thrown in the freezer overnight. Frozen bottle went into SN bag morning of IM…no insulation bags, padded envelopes or any of that malarky…it was thawed and ready to go for the second lap when I got it in SN.

If you don’t want to muck around with this, you could put a bottle in your SN bag with the powder and mix it fresh with a bottle of water at the first aid station. That means stopping again though.

Marbles. When I started concentrating InfinIT past 200% it got so goopy I couldn’t get it out of the flask. (I carry a handheld on the run with a 100% hour mix and carry the rest in concentrate in flasks…either in cycling jersey pockets or on an Amphipod belt for ultra-type action). Now I put 2 marbles in each flask and add some water when I take off the first serving…the agitation of my lurching/staggering/running mixes up the concentrate and it de-flasks sans problems.

What I do in training, not racing, is that I’ll take packages of dry InfinIT mix in ziploc baggies out with me. Then, I’ll stop at a gas station and get some water. Actually, when I’m doing long rides, I’ll have about 4 bottles with me and a gallon jug of water for $2 is enough to fill all of them up. It works for me, but I haven’t tried the concentrate stuff.

The stuff don’t chunk. Period. I have extra long chopsticks that I use to stir after addition of each scoop (don’t put all the water in the bottle at once). I’ve also used a toothbrush (at IMLP–didn’t have a knife or chopsticks). Stirs really easily.

For IM, I made 2 feed bottles, one on bike and one in special needs, and grabbed fresh, COLD water at each aid station.

I have several bottles that are marked for 4-hour bottles, 6-hour bottles, and for next weekend I need to make 7-hour bottles for a 180-mile ride.

It all works as long as you drink adequate water.

Well everyone thanks for the advice. I’m just back from a 95 mile ride on the IM Moo course. Took one bottle mixed to 300% (a “3 hour” bottle) on the first half of the ride - sipped it throughout and chased with water. Grabbed a second identical bottle for the second half. Worked like a charm and I’ve never felt better.

Count me among the believers. I love this stuff…
