Correct. When it came into the tri-state area it was a “super storm” that had combined with another low pressure front all arriving on a full moon high tide. That made it last longer and push a lot more water than if it had come ashore as a hurricane all by itself.
I live on Long Island and we had never seen anything close to this in most people’s lifetimes. Even Bob was no comparison, and it was a full blown hurricane. The closest thing we had seen was the storm of 1938 that split Fire Island into 3 pieces that remain today, and created the Shinnecock Inlet.
The problem with hurricanes that come into the Florida’s east coast on a direct hit is they normally go into the gulf and pick up new energy and them make a second land fall in a gulf state. This looks like it will turn north but there is always a chance she gets drunk on margaritas and stumbles back south and west.

I’m in Jupiter… I’m still holding out hope that this turns out to be like Matthew where it turns north just before it makes landfall. Was hoping I wouldn’t have to put shutters up but it looks inevitable now and will put them up tomorrow after a long ride.

Hopefully you don’t live right on the coast. My folks sold their house out on Hutchinson Island last year and moved inland to Stuart. Strip of island was maybe 200 years wide where their home was and one foot above sea level. They got their hurricane shutters on yesterday but are still up north for the annual snow bird flock in late Sept.
The latest windy track keeps the eye off shore heading north without making land fall. Lets hope for this. I think the more it slows the higher probability it never makes it to florida.

Hutchinson Island is VERY narrow in parts… I would love to live there so long as it’s outside hurricane season.

I live exactly one mile west of the coast. BUT, the intracoastal waterway is between me and the ocean so the storm surge isn’t really an issue for me.
