I’ve been involved in cycling, racing (personally), and watching it for over 20 years. Many others have more experience, but I feel like I’ve seen quite a bit on this topic.

I contend that governing bodies “allow” their sports figures to be superhuman because that’s what many people look for in their heroes. It’s better for them financially.

Very few people idolize the average joe, although maybe more of us should? At least the average joe has scruples.

The cynic in me is highly incredulous of that statement. These riders were just average joes–what changed? Idolatry of any kind seems to be a problem–most all of us are fairly easily corruptible.
