Doping in sports

I just have to say that I am sick and tired of hearing about this crap with A Rod and all Barry Bonds and even Lance. On the matter of baseball, all I have to say is that, although I don’t condone taking PEDs, it aggravates me to no end that people still find this news worthy. The fact is that when A Rod took these PEDs, it WAS NOT against the rules. Dumb, yes but not against MLB rules. It is the fault of the athletes for being stupid enough to put that shit into their bodies and risk their future health but it is also the fault of MLB, the commissioner, sponsors and all of us as fans for letting this go on. I have to say that I was of the belief that most, if not al, of pro baseball players were on something and to tell you the truth, I enjoyed when McGuire and Sosa were slugging it out. I enjoyed Barry Bonds’ run at the HR record. And I think A Rod is a terrific baseball player. This brings me to my second point. How can a sport like cycling allow doping and drugs to go on for approximately 100 years and then expect doping to be completely vanquished overnight. Once again, I don’t think that drugs have any place in cycling but It is only partially the athletes fault. There is plenty of blame to go around. The thing is, people are always talking about the new and innovative ways that cyclists are doping but, besides EPO, things haven’t changed all that much in the last 20 years or so. Now we have the prolonged testing with the biological passport and MLB and most of the major sports , including golf, are now testing so lets stop trying to catch people who cheated 5-10 years ago. It is a huge waste of time, effort and money. And it will never catch EVERYONE who cheated. I like the way things are going. People are being caught and punished and the system seems to be working so let’s focus on the future, not the past.

P.S. I think Floyd is innocent.

Greetings,

I am walking over to a box in the corner of my tiny flat, here in The Greater Microsoft Region of Bellevue/Redmond Wa.

The box is named ‘Pandora’…do I open it?

I am a competitive ELITE HIM and IM athlete, a former D1 swimmer and Tri-Pro from the 85-90 epoch…There is NO testing in tri
is It Drug Free?
Am I Drug Free?

Who Knows
Who Cares
Its all on the 'Honour System…oh Shit, the box just got kicked open

Not for nothing, but MLB’s drug policy expressly prohibited the use of steroids without a prescription since 1991.

The North American Stick and Ball (Plus Hockey, eh?) rules and penalties on drugs are Comical at BEST and Tragic at worst.

If we applied their rules and penalties to WADA/IOC sports, it would Sooo Be 'Game On!

We don’t need to worry in tri…its on the honour system,

“it WAS NOT against the rules. Dumb, yes but not against MLB rules.”

Does it bother you any amount that it was against the rules...as in violation of Federal (and most likely State) law? Federally (and in my State), steroids are classified in the same sked as LSD and is illegal to possess/use without a valid prescription.

I am not arguing that the players should be prosecuted, but the argument that it wasn't against the rules is just hollow.

I hear what you're saying, but it bothers me to no end when baseball players (or any athlete) says, "Well, it wasn't against the rules" Yes it was against the rules...maybe not MLB's rules, but certainly against the rules.

It was against some rule, leave it for others to ferret out which ones…WHat bothers me is all the lies about the drugs that a lot of them were taking…Of course they will lie until they actually get caught red handed, that is human nature, so I would expect no less. The really sad part is that I have no interest in any of the new records, because you can put a* next to most of them. It has interupted the flow and history of the game. Of course all these guys were/are great players, but now their records have become cartoonish, and the history of the game will have a 15 year gap in it for me…At least in the TDF, it is mano a mano, so there is a somewhat level playing field that has existed for the last 100 years. No one really cares what the mph of the peleton was, or how fast a climb up some mountain was. It is about place pretty much, so I can live with that history if things are really heading the other direction, and I believe they are. I just hate seeing Hank Arron’s records wiped out of the books, because that is more important to most players, than winning team championships…I mean, who knows how many world series Hank was part of??? Without googling I have no idea, but I do know about his HR record…

I bet doping is bigger than we think.
high school sports
fitness centers
police depts.
fire departments
college sports
pro sports
rec. sports
botox—hgh----implants—hormones----

It would be MUCH bigger but it’s expensive

I think most know that it’s in h.s. sports and fitness centers as well as college, pro, and amateur sports. Not sure about fire and police. I know guys from my h.s. football team did steroids and still sucked. So much for performance enhancing. It just helped them act like assholes at parties and start fights.
My new disgruntled stance - legalize it all and let the adults decide what they want to put into their bodies. Definitely for baseball and football where they have $$$$$$. Of course, it’s pretty much legal in football isn’t it?

I just hate how all everyone just talks about A ROd when there are 103 other names on that list. These idiots act like they didn’t know that there was rampant steroid use going on and then they act terribly surprised when these athletes get caught. One of my favorite comedians of all time, Daniel Tosh said it the best. He said ,“I want my athletes like my video games, i have high definition tv, anything that makes them run faster, jump higher, let’s go. Who cares if you die at 40, you hate life after sports anyway.” Now that’s not my exact take on steroids but it is where a lot of these pro athletes are headed.

I see your point, but can’t help but think about track and field. Runners aren’t just mano-a-mano. They compete for records against other athlete’s records. if/when doping is successfully wiped out of T&F there will be a long gap for world records to stand.

I see your point, but can’t help but think about track and field.\

I agree, I put track and field in with baseball, the records have a long, and historical meaning to the sport and the fans…About the only thing that compares in cycling, is the hour record, and a few other track races. But the hour one is the big one that we all know about…

You are already seeing the gap in some womens events. The records are faster then even today’s dirty runners can run

It would be MUCH bigger but it’s expensive

Actually, it’s not. You could get a 4 month cycle of testosterone for about the same amount of money you’d pay for an entry fee into your favorite 70.3 race.

That is flat out wrong. It amazes me how many people get this one wrong.

Major league baseball officially banned the use of anabolic steroids in 1991. There were basically no penalties but it was explicitly against the rules.

OK. Even so. If there is no penalty then is it against the rules “technically”? MLB knew it was going on.HEll, I knew and I am just some scmuck in LA.

Yes. When it is against the rules explicitly, it is also against them technically, literally, figuratively, and a whole bunch of other words ending in “ly”. It is when you try to wink at such behavior in this way that people get away with it.

: The penalties were that s first positive test would lead to treatment. A second would lead to a 15-day suspension. Bans (one year) did not happen until after the fifth positive result.

It’s easy to get a bogus prescription for HRT(there are plenty of them in FL). Once you’re an “established patient”, there is access to quite a few PED’s(Test, etc…). And the bonus, you get a note stating that “you’re under doctor’s care”. Classic. I bet there are quite a few “athletes” going that route(including:amateur, masters, elite, whatever).
