Personally, I can’t stand the smell of marijuana and I never have gotten used to its pungent – slightly unpleasant (at least to me) – odor. I feel the same way about cigarette smoke. I’ve never tried even a single puff from a cigarette either, sensing instinctively as a young child that putting a burning object in your mouth and sucking in the smoke from it couldn’t be good for you, and I think the same about its smoke and odors as well. Same reason for why I’ve never tried weed (dope, ganja, Maryjane, pot, skunk…you name it). Plus, I think the dope lifestyle is just dumb. Sorry.
But I’m libertarian, and that’s given me the perspective needed to just shrug my shoulders about either of those weeds and move on, minding my own business for the most part. If I don’t like it, I just don’t go to places where it or the behavior (whatever those are) may be. “Wisdom of the people will prevail” and all that nonsense.
I should note, however, that my impulse toward live-and-let-live doesn’t necessarily comport with what the norm is in society at large. Because even in places where pot is technically legal (meaning, in several states), it isn’t actually legal-legal, because it’s still against federal law. So the states need to get together and encourage their representatives in Congress to change that law if they’re serious about legalizing it across the board.
“Like cigarette smokers, marijuana smokers get used to the smell and don’t notice how loathsome it can be to those who don’t share their habits. Unlike cigarette smokers, however, pot smokers haven’t yet developed strong norms about not bothering the neighbors.â€
Marijuana Smokers Should Be More Considerate - Bloomberg
Been legal for a while now and I’ve yet to smell anyone other than me smoking it and wtf? I still routinely smell cigarette smoke, so not all that considerate.
Here in Colorado, you smell it everywhere. And it’s not legal in public places. You smell it at the park, smell it on the bike trails. I’ve seen and smelled it coming from peoples cars. I don’t go to concerts anymore because of the abundance. And the worst is driving through the areas where the grow house warehouses are. The whole neighborhoods smell.
I actually am for legalization, but I do believe we have to enforce the no smoking in public part so that those of us that don’t want to be around it don’t have to…
I think it is sad that I can’t take my family to any of the public festivals or events in downtown because of this. And I really hate that I can’t even go to concerts inside (like at the Pepsi Center) because people even smoke inside there and no one (security) will enforce the no smoking laws.

Sounds a bit like Irish democracy in action.

We went to the Telluride blue grass festival a couple of years ago and camped. The kids kept complaining about the smell of marijuana smoke around our tent.

It doesn’t have to be a “lifestyle” and you don’t have to smoke it. You can eat it. I haven’t had any weed in years but have only fond memories. But yeah, people shouldn’t blow smoke where other people can breathe it.

I live in a condo where my bedroom is above the garage of my downstairs neighbors. THAT condo is a smoke free rental. That being said, SEVERAL renters have smoked cigarettes in that garage. We have begged and pleaded with renters to stop doing it because the smoke come up into our bedroom.
That same condo has a back patio. Every single smoker has refused to smoke out on the patio and always does it in the garage. One guy used to sit right below our window w/his garage door open and smoke.
There is now a weed smoker renting that condo. He has NEVER smoked in the garage. He always smokes on the back patio. I only smell it when I’m outside, near the back of the building. And I have thanked him for this many times.
I live in Vancouver and on my way to work, I can smell pot almost every single day. I find it disgusting too.
I’ll give this to dope smokers: you don’t see a ton of butts – like you do with cigarettes – out on the roads and streets, tossed like so much waste from many a moving car. Nope, the weed folks smoke that joint right down to its molecular substance.
That second hand smoke also puts us at risk of losing our jobs if your job depends on passing random drug tests. Tests have show you can get a high from second hand smoke and you can test positive for drugs.
Preferring not to use AC when I don’t need it, I open all the windows at night when it cools down. Sometimes my pot smoking neighbours (2 houses away) will force me to close them and turn the AC back on.
