Door County Triathlon 7/24/05

I rec’d a brochure for this race in Door County WI. It is a first year event. Anybody have any info on it? Experience with race directors? Familiar with the venue? It seems like a neat place for a race, but I am looking for some inside scoop as to whether it is worth the 7 hour drive.

A friend knows the race director and from what I hear I would expect a very well run race with a great and scenic course. The race director seems prety experienced with other races, including directing the Green Bay Marathon. If he can handle doing something like that, I would think he has the structure and experience in place to do a great job with the triathlon.

It is a beautiful area. that alone is worth the drive.

we have a house up there on the other side of the pennisula (lake michigan side). summers are better than any place i’ve been in the country.

the bay side is calmer, so the swim should be good. there are a LOT of hills in the area.

if you decide to give it a go, i’ll see you there…

plus, when you are done, the bay side has one of the best ice cream places…Wilsons in Ephraim. yum.

I’ve done the Lake Mills race a few times, its part of the same series of races. That one is nice little local race that seems to be well run. I also got the mailer the other day and was thinking it may be a good addition along with a break from the city for a weekend.

Do you have any recommendations for a place to stay in Egg Harbor? We were going to add a couple of days on the back end for a little family vacation. Thanks.

Most of the places to stay are bed/breakfasts - don’t know any by name because our beach house has been in the family since before i was born. some even have pools. most also have lake views.

the door county pennisula is a great place for family vacation. in egg harbor you can go fishing, rent a sail boat, kayak, go-kart, putt putt golf, rent scooters, excellent golf courses, art galleries, entertainment, excellent resturants.

the area is not cheap, as it is a ‘tourist trap’, but the towns on the lake side are more quiet and less expensive. you’ll pay premium on the bay side because it’s where all the shops are.

and don’t forget about wilson’s ice cream!
