With all of the scammers out there what is the best way to be protected when selling online. I have never bought nor sold on Ebay because there seems to be so many ways to get riipped (stolen cc# paid via paypal, bogus money order/cashier checks).
I thought about UPS cod but even that could be an issue. I only have a few things to sell and don’t want to get stuck.
If you’re on the selling end, there’s not a whole lot to worry about other than the high bidder not paying. Otherwise here are some tips when buying:
Check feedback and avoid big ticket items on people with low feedback numbers, even positive. Everyone has to start somewhere sure, but not with high dollar items.
Use a credit card for payments. There’s some extra protection there. I never buy anything without using Paypal.
I believe most identity theft comes from people answering scam emails and providing the information themselves. Services such as Paypal will never ask for personal info through an email.
Most transactions on ebay are legit and go off without a hitch. I’ve bought and sold many, many times and will continue to do so. Just use common sense.
There is always a risk when selling or buying through ebay. That’s the price you pay for convenience. The risk might be a little overstated since it’s usually the people ripped off that post on the boards.
Chances are since you don’t have many transactions, you won’t get the best price anyways. Most buyers don’t like to bid much on sellers with few ratings. And COD will definitely turn buyers off.
If it causes you so much grief getting ripped off, then you probably should just avoid ebay. I’ve done over 50 ebay transactions without a hitch, but if I get ripped off some day it won’t stress me because I factor that into my buying/selling. I figure the money I’ve saved more than makes up for anything I might get ripped off for.
