Don't see how you freaks run after a < 3000 yard swim session

How in the world do you freaks run after swimming 3000 yards? You can’t swing your arms TO RUN. I usually swim about 1500 yards, or a little more, at noon, then at 5 P.M, I usually can worm out 8-10 miles.

For some reason, however, if the swim is into 3k or more, for me: I’m sleepy all afternoon, its like somebody sucked out my life force energy.

I can see biking after swims <3000 or more, but running is just brutal.

I think if you go into 3000 or more, unless you totally get used to that hammering, or go take a four hour nap, or just write off the rest of the day for seven plus hours, I think running is out of the question. I actually had to stop running because I couldn’t swing my fricking arms after 2 miles.

***And Paulo, I don’t want to hear any of your crap about Jst F’n Running. How can we run if we have no arms? Figure that one out. I am Pogo boy. See me run. No arms. I trust at this camp I may sign up for, which I will probably go to, after we do 3k of swim, we’ll wait until the next day for a light, easy jog.

I don’t think I’m a freak or a hammerhead, and I am nowhere near the athlete most posters on ST are, but I can run after swimming (3000-3600m). I sweat like a pig (i.e.: far more than usual) for some reason, and the run generally sucks, but I can do it.

However I will agree that riding after swimming is far easier and far more enjoyable.

Maybe you’re sleepy all afternoon because of what you eat after your lunch swim. You have to have the carbs to get refueled for your evening session, but you should make a real effort to have the low GI carbs with some protein - I have found it to help tons is avoiding the 2pm need for a nap.

I would bet its becaue you are DOUBLING your normal workout.

Would you doublw your running time just for the kicks? No. How about your cycling time? Nope!

Try 2000 for a few weeks, then 2300ish for a few weeks and so on. Just because its a low impact sport doesnt mean it isnt hard to do or take its toll on your body.

I’m starting over after an injury and wont see 3k for about three week, and I’m a swimmer. Swim WELL first, far second. WHen you can do both, you’ll be a monster in the water.

Why don’t you swim 4000 or 5000 yards on the days you don’t run later, and then it will be easy to run on the days when you only swim 3,000 yards.

Run with a baby jogger. Then you have somewhere to rest your arms.

How in the world do you freaks run after swimming 3000 yards?

Actually, I find that less of a problem than the day of the event after exiting the water and trying to avoid having a picture snapped by one of the event photogarapher while still blowing snot, trying to regain control of legs without looking silly, and all while somehow motivating the legs to carry the rest of the body faster and faster in route to the bike! :^D

I have noticed this with swimming more so than running or cycling too. I’m not much of a swimmer but after an hour workout or so i just feel all the energy sapped out of me for a few hours even if it wasn’t a tough workout while i’m doing it. But i don’t feel nearly as sleepy and drained after a 90 minute run or 3 hour ride. weird, any explanations?

If you aren’t a swimmer, but have a background in running or cycling, the swimming is lot harder on you. I swam competitively for 12 years, and therefore the swimming is easy for me even though I have only been swimming about one day a week for one year after taking 18 years completely off from swimming. My running is okay because I’ve been running marathons for a few years. My biking is lousy, and an easy 40 miles on a bike wears me out more than 15 miles of running or 5,000 yards of hard swimming. If you keep working on your swimming, it will get easier and you will get better at it.

Too much chlorine exposure? You can hold intensity in a swim workout for longer than a run or bike one?

As for the original question, part of it is really developing sport-specific muscle endurance. I can remember many a day of finishing a 5000 yard practice, rinsing off the pool water, and then spending an hour plus playing ultimate frisbee without feeling too tired during the game.

If you do 5k swimming, it will DEFINITELY mess with your running, if you go run within 2 hours after you do that.

If you do 5k swimming, it will DEFINITELY mess with your running, if you go run within 2 hours after you do that. Really depends upon how good and how fit a swimmer you are. When I was in high school, I had two three hour practices a week when I would swim between 11,500 to 12,500 yards, almost all of which would be fairly intense intervals. At the time, I probably could have run just about as well after 8,000 or 9,000 yards of hard swimming as I could have without swimming at all. At the time, this simply meant that I would run poorly whether I had been swimming or not. It’s really just a matter of what you have trained your body to do. If you keep up what you are doing, it will be easier in a couple months, much easier next year and even easier the year after that.

Bring a bottle of Gatorade (or drink of your choice) to the pool and sip on that during your workout, see how you feel afterwards. It allways makes me feel stronger.

My normal swim is 4000 yds and running 10K afterwards is no big deal. You have to eat something after the swim. I eat bananas, cliff bars, maybe a gel, at least a couple hundred calories.

A year ago I couldn’t do this, I had to build up to it.

Good luck
