Dog training - running

Wife and I recently got a new dog. Regular training is going well (come, sit, stay, etc), but I’d like to take him trail running with me over the winter. Does anyone have any suggestions on training him to stay with me while running?

He’s a collie / shepherd mix, so he’ll have no problem keeping up.

Thanks

Wow, what a cutie!!! Is he a puppy? If so, you will want to be very careful with running him, especially because he’s probably going to be a big dog. There have been a few threads over in the main forum on running with puppies, so you might want to do a search. The general rule of thumb seems to be they should only run about one minute for each month of age until they are a year old. Its not good for the long-term development of their joints.

Ok, this comment isn’t very helpful, but I just love how your leash is a freakin thick piece of rope. That dog ain’t goin’ NOWHERE!

Beautiful little guy. He looks just like my buddies dog. Anyways, there are a ton of threads about running with dogs. MonicaB hits the nail on the head; do a search of both the main forum and this forum and you’ll get a ton of information.

There’s also one guy on the forum that has tremendous insight re: dog training. There was a thread recently (think it was started by kittycat) wherein he dishes out a ton of great advice.

Yeah, well that was the leash I made for my dog that died earlier this year. She was a German Shepherd, and needed a big leash…

Plus that sized rope was easier to braid back into itself for the end loops.
