Dog running

can someone reccomend a hands free leash system. I have a rhodesian ridgeback that loves to go with me when I run.

I have two GSPs and I contend that if your dog cannot run on a normal leash without pulling, going handless is a risky proposition. That aside, the following are very good systems (depending if you want harness or collar):

Here’s what I use with my lab:

He is actually well behaved on a leash. Doesn’t pull, the only problem is that he is a sight hound so he wants to chase things that move. It is instinct and while he is mostly broken of it, if he sees a squirrel or some other animal he gets his hackles up and stops paying attention to what he is doing. Actually he is a great running partner, he doesn’t complain about his sore feet, hips, blisters, etc like one guy I run with. He is one great dog. Thanks for the ideas i’m gonna go witht the ruff wear.

If it were me that would be THE red flag against hands-free leashes.

If he’s a sight hound, how would you get him to come back to you if he took off after a squirrel? Seems to me that it would be the reason to not go hands free.

Not trying to be a wiseass, I’m interested in what your thinking is.

good obdeience, I’ve heard that before can’t stop them once they get on a chase. Never had a problem in three years, I can stop him with just my voice if he is in the yard and takes off after a deer.

notice i said he wants to chase things that move but doesn’t act on it.

Fair enough. Sounds like a great dog.

So when he sees something, does he stop and point or something like that?

I run with my Springer Spaniel. He gets a little too excited to be running as he is still a pup, so we use a Halti. Its basically a head harness that pulls his mouth closed if he pulls on the leash. He hates to wear the thing, but loves when it comes out bc it means hes going for a run. The good thing is it doesn’t hurt or choke him, as with choke collars a lot of dogs will just pull until they are about to pass out. This thing just closes his mouth and turns his head, which means he rarely, if ever, pulls.

agree, halti for both of my girls

if they tend to cross you for a squirrel chase, a reminder to the heel/achilles breaks that
.

his hackles go up and ears perk up. If it is a dog barking at him then he’ll bey doesn’t really pull but stops paying attention to me. He is a great runner.
