Does the new Ultegra Di2 11 speed work on 10 speed wheels?

Title says it all…found a good deal on Di2 ultegra 11 speed…but Im running all 10 speed wheels.

Nope, it won’t work. It’ll rip all the teeth off of a 10-speed cassette, and may possibly break the chainstay from the torsional whip effect. I’d search to find out more details.

I bought a Cycle Ops PowerTap SL freewheel body from Competitive Cyclist. My build isnt complete, by my mechanic said it would do the trick. Hope that helps! I cost around $60

No but you have options. You can use the new Ultegra Di2 but swap out the rear derailleur for the old one and update the firmware. Or could see if there are 11 speed freehubs for your wheels.

The firmware update will also give you all sorts of other goodies - http://www.bikerumor.com/2013/10/23/how-to-update-shimano-di2-to-multishift-customize-button-function-change-shift-speed/

Actually there is another trick available to you, where you can use 11-spd di2 (the full 11-spd drivetrain, including RD and cassette) and still use your older wheels. The method is simple and free, the shifting is great, but it does entail a small compromise.

Well if you have Mavic wheels, then you just need to switch your cassette out to an 11 speed cassette and ditch the extra spacer.

wow…that show would be worth the price of admission… on someone elses bike.

enlighten please
.

I went ahead and ordered the di2…thank all of you for your suggestions. I believe the best option will be to purchase a 10sp r.d. also and just have the firmware updated. Then IDK what Ill do with the 11 sp r.d. I still want to know what DarkSpeedWorks solution is:) i am training a Mavics but I race on Stinger Disc…so the Mavic seems easy enough to change but I talked to HED and to change out the Stinger to 11 speed would be alot of money and work and time.

enlighten please

Sure, take a look at this. Works great.

If doing the hack that DarkSpeedWorks suggests, you’ll need to adjust your limit screws so that your derailleur doesnt try to shift your chain into the spokes or the frame. When there is an addition shift and the di2 derailleur is stopped by the limit screws from shifting further to the 11th gear, it’ll try for 5 seconds (you’ll hear the motor struggling) then it will back off and settle on the 10th gear.

I was wondering about that. Ironically…it seems the gears you have to remove happen to be my favorite gears:( Do you know how well it shifts with this hack? I cant believe you cant just program the 11 to adjust to 10.

Thanks for sharing that DSW. That is a possibility but those are my favorite gears to ride in.
