Does our tri club accept a grumpy old triathlete?

I am the treasurer of a small triathlon club in florida. There is a local guy who is a pain in the butt at most local races and he wants to be in the club (over 70 years old). He has a reputation of complaining about everything. I have first hand RD experience with him to testify to his pain-in -the-buttness.

Does your tri club accept all comers or does it turn away people? Just curious as to thoughts.

Would it be possible to admit him on a trial basis? You could make the argument that you know him personally to be difficult, and you’d love to have him but he needs to be on his best behavior because as a member of the club he no longer represents just himself, but everyone in the club and their families.

It’s not fair to exclude anybody on their age, but the grumpiness factor is a consideration. Whenever you get a group of people together it always seems there is always one individual that wrecks it for everybody else. I’d go for the trial basis and maybe even have a gentle talk to him about his attitude beforehand.
