I like the way you think. Additionally there are definitely factions in Tehran that want the US to attack them because they believe Allah’s wrath will strike down the great Satan. Quite misguided, but when has there ever been a rational belief in religion?

About ~12-20 of the “C†variants of the Tomahawk could take Kharg Island offline for close to a decade. Iran’s whole economy? Not quite, but that’s their only oil export terminal and therefore their only hope for economic development. If you really wanted to piss in their oats you could use a few more to target domestic oil and gas pipeline infrastructure traversing key mountain passes (read: very difficult, time consuming, and expensive to fix)

We’ve fired a lot more than 12-20 Tomahawks and/or cruise missiles at targets in SW Asia, without seeing significant changes there. (802 Tomahawks along with other missiles, bombs, artillery shells, and other warheads were used against Iraq just in 2003.) 12-20 1000-lb warheads won’t take out Kharg Island for a decade.
Given the current difficulties Iran is facing with respect to their economy, an attack on Kharg Island wouldn’t necessarily be a significant addition to their existing problems. Simply attacking Kharg Island wouldn’t be enough. How far is the US willing to go?

Over 95% of their exports go through the terminal and such an attack would expose them as impotent. Afghanistan had no infrastructure to speak of whereas Iran is a relatively developed country.

You can’t really compare cruise missile strikes in Afghanistan to potential cruise missile strikes in Iran. Afghanistan has no modern infrastructure to speak of. Iran at least has a modicum. Iran has a small network of natural gas pipelines with compressor stations spaced 30-60 miles apart in most places. Destroying just one knocks the pipeline offline. Targeting a handful of those (you’d pick the most difficult ones to repair/replace) would promptly send Iran back into the Stone Age.
Regarding Kharg Island, it is not hardened and contains plenty of combustible material. That said, you’d target various valve stacks, control stations, and any on-site fire control or suppression infrastructure, not the storage tanks. The rest would burn itself out.
