Does cometing at Olympics make you better looking?

I’ve noticed ove the years that in my (not so) humble opinion, Olympians look better than the rest of us. Does competing at the Olympics make you better looking.

Take the test.

Play the tape of the opening ceremonies and watch the athletes walking along. They’e all dressed in casual attire. Now rate them, guys and girls, on your normal 10 point rating system. You get some score right?

Now walk along your local mall, rate the people you see walking the other way. Keep score.

I bet the Olympians have a much better average score than us :frowning:

Now why do you suppose that is?

I’ve done some of my own thinking and here goes. Firstly, to get to the Olympics you have to be extremely good physically (well, except the shooters). As you’ve probably seen on one of those documentaries about beauty, a big component of beauty is symmetry.

I think this is important in athletic prowess. If you lack symmetry, you tend to perform lop sided. One side is weak and more injuries may result, certainly one (even minorly) weak side means your maximum is limited. Lop sidedness (is that even a word?) may lead to performance reducing potential and injuries.

If you have a high degree of symmetry, you have a slight natural edge and may perform better. Hence, If you’re good looking you will probably perform better and therefore stand a better chance of going to the Olympics.

Then there is the psychological side of being symmetrical. If you’re symmetrical you are by definition, better looking. Good looking people get treated better and tend to get further in life. Also, If my hypothesis is correct, you WILL be better physically, and then when you get treated better, it’s a win win situation and you do even better. It’s a self perpetuating cycle of success.

The other thing is that the Athletes must be pretty happy to be in the parade (and the Olympics) so they tend to smile. We all know smiling makes just about anyone (with good teeth) better looking.

Your thoughts?

mall people = fat & greasy

olympic people = fit & tan

No matter how symetrical, fit and tan always looks better than fat and greasy.

the amt of training that these athletes go through makes them some of the best physical specimens on earth. Who would rather date, someone who is fit, strong and ripped or someone who can eat 3 bags of marshmellows and looks like one to boot?

Based on the stories I’ve heard about the flow of testosterone in the Olympic village, I wish I was the lone member of the Jamaican triathlon team!!! Oooooh baby!!!

yeah i was reading about the controversy that happened about the thousands of condoms they have and distributing them to athletes… I can’t imagine what happens in that village…

"I can’t imagine what happens in that village… "

You don’t have to. Do a search for the thread about the Olympics and sex. There was a pretty good article there.

I think it depends on where you live. Also, Olympians are younger than the general population.

Being incredibly fit doesn’t hurt either

did ya see the Bulgarian women? oy!

I said on AVERAGE! remember. NOt all of them are Calendar girls.

The Bulgarian women are balanced by the women swimmers, so that STILL makes them better looking than average. (Unless you happen to live at at the Playboy Mansion

Oh yeah, how about the Dutch womens hockey team. I have to go now.

You’ve heard of beer goggles, right? These are called ‘speed goggles’. Being a good athlete automatically bumps you up at least a point on the 10 scale.

Being a good athlete means I have to give back the two points I get for being blonde. Damn. Back to 8.5/10 (Damn I’m funny)

Peter Reid, Cameron Brown etc all GET 2 points. Where do they get those points? Ugly fat bastards like me…that’s where!

Where do I find all that beer? It’s left lying around by the likes of Peter Reid and Cameron Brown. Ha Ha Ha. I’d rather have beer than the 2 points!

you’re right on that. i went out with one of the girls on nz olympic swimming team. i think i was her first kiss. haha. i remember her teeth hitting mine. ahhh 16 yrs old.

A great and brave observation. It’s the type of observation that many people are scared to make. Like the one that if you are a man and over 6’ tall you will earn on average, something like $10 - $20,000 per year than shorter men and the taller men will be more “successful”.

The same could be said in sports these days. Of course first you have to have the talent, ability and will to train very hard, but sport at this level is also about business - attracting and keeping sponsors and supporters and if you look good, this job is quite a bit easier.

I hear what you are saying about the difference between the Olympic folks and walking down the main street or mall of any major North American city. I say this in total generality, but many people are overweight and seem to have lost all sense of style or fashion these days.

I have a foot in both camps. I train like an olympian (or at least with them) (Hamish Carter and Nathan Richmond) and look like I belong at the mall in some baggy tack pants.

I think most people these days seem to have lost their self respect. Not pride, because pride is bad, but self respect and self belief. Those that retain it seem to do better.

I always see a lot of hot women at the mall. Isn’t that where they hang out?

They’re not at the mall silly, hot women are at the supermarket! Everybody knows that

Brave?

Bravery is what stupid people do for fun or scared people do out of desperation.

Not sure which side of that fence I fall.

BTW, I’m short and broke, so your hypothesis seems to fit this sample of 1.
