Does anyone struggle with ´normal´holidays ? - mid holiday observations

Do you find that the confines/concept of a normal holiday is a bit of a strain ? I´m finding that travelling around without a structured training program and no races a bit of niggle. Is this what performance orientated lifestyles do to us ?

I walked past a bike shop last night and you could see me drooling down the glass… I´m so ashamed…

Can’t stand ‘normal’ holidays. If it doesn’t involve climbing excessively large mtns or riding/running further than I normally would, I’m bored out of my mind within a day or two. Site seeing is not my thing. Though I have always wanted to see a bit of Spain…

I have not taken a normal holiday since I was a kid. My brother is apalled by what I do on vaction. 15 day backpacking trips, 2 weeks bike packing, traveling to a 50k running race in december. He doesn’t do anything that doesn’t involve a motor. Best trip ever, I bike toured a week from my home to the departure point for Isle Royale National Park, took the ferry to the park, backpacked for two weeks, got back on the bike and rode home. Of course I was in college back then and could quit my job to go on vacation. I stilll vacation like this but stay in hotels more often than I used to. Of course I am single…could be one of the reasons why.

Nope, I have no trouble at all enjoying a “normal” holiday, in fact when I was in…

Hmm, let’s see before I got into Triathlon, 10 years ago, my holidays were Snowboarding in Europe for 13 seasons with some overlap. So, I guess I do the last “normal” holiday I took would have been a lads’ trip to Kos in 1986.

Sad, so sad to “normal people”.

I was even spotted eating an ice cream and watching scantily clad girls play volleyball today. No surf but plenty to look at. We were out down at one of the beaches near the rice paddyfields today. A lot of cyclists seem to be congregated down here in some real retro 80´s jerseys. I did offer to do a criterium round the block against them (I really need to race now)but they were mid sangria at the time. They are pretty chilled out these spanish…

So basically they laughed at you, right?

No, the bike wouldn´t have fitted and they didn´t understand a single word I said! That and the fact I would struggle with old downtube shifters!

I didn’t go on a ‘normal’ holiday until I was 28 and took my girlfriend to Greece for a week. Up until then it was always hiking/climbing/motorbiking or similar.

Now, I just take my running shoes with me and get strange looks from passers by. My wife’s not really into adventure sports, but she likes travelling and exploring. Couple of years ago she was working away in New Zealand so I visited for a couple of weeks and then went to Nepal for two months. Walked around a chunk of the himalaya’s and just spent quality time with the mountains. Wonderful.

Having problems with holidays these days and we pretty much realised we’ll have to have a solo holiday each every couple of years. This year she’s going to Germany with her mother and sister to visit the places her mum grew up. I’m doing Timberman half ironman in New Hampshire and then going to Burning Man in Nevada.

We’re going to japan together next week and possibly Cambodia/vietnam in November so we still do fun stuff together.

I can’t think of much worse than a fortnight in a resort sitting on a beach.

J.

Amen to that.

I´ve just got back from my early morning 90 minute run to watch the sun come up. A fantastic sight out here. It was rather amusing getting round the cultural shift. As I ws heading out at 6:30 the stragglers from last nights festivities were still making their way home…

Take your girlfriend to Greece again.
