You see it in every modern movie that involves gangstas or gangsta wannabe’s, see it referenced in modern comedy culture (Chappelle, etc) and I’m sure if I listened to hip hop I’d hear it there too. But how does the game work? All I ever see is the backs of a bunch of dudes squatting on the ground and tossing dice against a bit of cardboard that’s been propped up on a wall.
I assume it’s some sort of take-off on craps, but I can’t say that I really understand that game either…
When we play “Dice” at our house, it’s actually a version of Shut-the-Box. We either play with a box and numbered tiles, or with a piece of paper (or just in our heads). Numbers are 1-9.
On a turn a player repeatedly throws the dice to account for each of the numbers, it ends when no tile can be covered on a throw and the players penalty score gets calculated. The goal is to cover all numbers, that is, “shut the box”, which results in a penalty score of zero.
At the start of a player’s turn all tiles are uncovered. Two dice are rolled and the corresponding tile of partitioned numbers of the sum are covered, e.g., the dice show a 2 and a 3, so 5, 1 + 4 or 2 + 3 tiles could be covered. If every numbered tile higher than 6 is covered you could use one die. The turn ends if no tile could be covered on a throw of the dice. A player’s score is the sum of the numbers remaining uncovered at the end of his turn. The player with the lowest score wins.
Courtesy of Wikipedia. There’s mroe to the game, esp. if gambling is involved…but that’s a synopsis.
Not that I actually know the real answer, but I always assumed that since they’re playing without a craps table that it would be similar to craps in the casino but simplified— without the odds or prop bets (hard numbers, field, etc)… basically only bets that pay out even 1 to 1 odds, because they would not have a way of keeping track of the bets like they do in a casino (In a casino they track bets by where they place the bet on the table and how they stack the chips).
In short… The only bet allowed would be a “pass line” bet without odds… the “come out roll” pays even money on 7 or 11… 2/3/12 are losers. After the point is established, the point would pay even money, and rolling a seven would lose and end the roll.
It surely not the dice game that you are referring to in classic scenes, but the game Farkle is really fun. Perfect game for a rainy day or an evening at the cabin with friends. Its been a while, so I don’t exactly remember the rules, but once you get in the groove, its really fun!!!
Thank you! Generally whenever I see a scene where they’re shooting dice I’ll turn to whoever’s with me (assuming I haven’t asked them before) and ask: “Do you know how that works?”. They typically look at me like I’ve just asked if they want to buy a rock of crack and have never known…
There’s another fun dice game I thought you might mean too, but I guess not. I learned it as a drinking game and then saw it on the 2nd (or 3rd?) Pirates of the Caribbean movie. It’s the one the dead pirates play, then what’s his young-face-and-women-love-him plays against the capt’n to win the key to the chest. That’s a fun one where each player gets 5 dice, you roll and keep your own hidden. You have to go around in a circle guessing/bluffing how many of any given number there are total (including your’s and your opponents’ who you can’t see). When someone calls BS, if you’re right they lose, if you’re wrong, you lose. Lots of strategy in it! That probably didn’t make any sense, but if you need a good drinking game with some brain activity - this can fit the bill.
